The following recalls have been announced: — Nature's Variety is recalling one lot of Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet for dogs and cats because the products could be conta- minated with salmonella. Contaminated pet food can infect animals as well as people who have not han- dled the products properly. The company received one customer complaint linked to a lot not affected by the recall. There have been no reported pet or human ill- nesses linked to the recalled lot, according to the Lin- coln, Neb., company. The recall involves different forms, including chicken medallions, patties and chubs, with a ''best if used by'' date of Nov. 10, 2010. The products were distrib- uted in retail stores and online in the U.S. and in Canada. For more informa- tion, consumers can call 800-374-3142. — Estrella Family Creamery is recalling its Red Darla cheese because it might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. For information, consumers can call 360-249-6541. NEW YORK (MCT) — U.S. stocks rose Thursday as encour- aging economic data, plus a pledge from European Union leaders to support Greece, encouraged investors to bet the global economic recovery would stay on track. The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 113 points, or 1.1 percent, at 10,150. The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.3 percent. The Standard & Poor's 500-share index was up 1 percent, led by its energy and materials sectors as crude-oil futures rose above $75 a barrel and metals futures climbed. The Russell 2000 index of small-capitalization stocks climbed 1.3 percent. Small-cap stocks are perceived as riskier because of their higher volatility and lower cash reserves. The action came as investors were heartened by a better-than- expected weekly jobs report. U.S. stock investors were also relieved Thursday by a statement from European Council President Herman Van Rompuy that euro- zone countries have pledged to support Greece through its debt crisis. The pledge helped bolster the widening consensus on Wall Street that Greece's neighbors will do what is necessary to sup- port the monetary union. "We now know there's going to be some aid there," said Terry Morris, co-portfolio Manager at National Penn Investors Trust. "That's a relief in itself. But there's no details." However, the statement didn't produce all the Greece-related measures traders expected earlier in the week. An afternoon rally in U.S. stocks helped the euro rebound from an earlier drop to near eight- month lows, but investors yearn- ing for specifics on support for Greece kept the euro depressed on a day when other risk-sensi- tive currencies, such as the Aus- tralian dollar, rallied strongly. The euro has now ceded the gains it had made earlier in the week in anticipation of a deal to support Greece. Among stocks in focus, Pepsi- co rose 1.4 percent after the bev- erage giant reported fourth-quar- ter net income of $1.4 billion, or 90 cents a share, in line with expectations. FirstEnergy Corp. fell 4.3 per- cent after it agreed to a $4.7 bil- lion takeover of Mid-Atlantic utility Allegheny Energy Inc. Allegheny's shares jumped 13 percent. Activision Blizzard climbed 9.9 percent after it reported a wider fourth-quarter loss but issued better than expected guid- ance for the full year. Boston Scientific Corp. slid 9.8 percent. The medical-device maker's fourth-quarter loss nar- rowed, but medical-device maker issued a conservative sales fore- cast for the new year compared with analysts estimates. In addition, the company announced sweeping restructur- ing moves that include eliminat- ing up to 1,300 jobs, shifting management roles throughout the business and promoting its finan- cial chief. Caterpillar Inc. was the Dow industrial average's best per- former with a jump of 5.7 per- cent, lifted by rising commodities prices as well as data released Thursday indicating that con- sumer price inflation in China is moderating. Concerns about how China's efforts to put the brakes on its growth have weighed on com- modities and stocks in recent weeks, and the country's Thurs- day report of a slowing in its consumer prices was seen as lessening the possibility for tightening measures in the near term. "If you look at the drivers behind commodities, it's really the fact that growth is around the corner," said Bob Tull, chief operating officer of Old Mutual Global Index Trackers. "The economy looks like it's turning around here and China's made some positive statements." Also boosted by the com- modities gains, aluminum com- pany Alcoa Inc. rose 3.4 percent, while energy giant Chevron Corp. climbed 1.4 percent. 6A – Daily News – Friday, February 12, 2010 5 TH Annual BEST OF TEHAMA COUNTY www.redbluffdailynews.com or Vote online at Your ballot must be received by Monday, March 1, 2010 Mail to: Tehama County's Best, c/o Daily News Advertising Dept.
