In a game tighter than its 5-2 score- line would suggest, Los Molinos knocked off Mercy, Thursday, to claim the regular season MVL league title by a half-game. Three minutes into the second half of a 1-1 match, Los Molinos forward Alberto Rodriguez streaked down the left side and drew a penalty shot for the Bulldogs. Los Molinos captain Freddy Castel- lon, calmly converted it with a slow rolling ball to the right side of the net. Rodriguez and the Bulldogs would continue to apply pressure for the next 10 minutes, but Mercy's goalie Gabriel Guerrero held the Warriors in the game and maybe a bit of luck did as well. In the 54th minute, Los Molinos appeared to have taken a two-goal lead when Gaumel Murillo kicked at a loose ball teetering on the goal line, but no signal came from the referee and play continued. Two minutes later, the Los Molinos keeper had similar trouble holding onto the ball in a muddy goal crease and Henry Wan made the referee's decision easy, by pounding the ball into the back of the net to square the game at 2-2. Rodriguez wasn't done however and put the Bulldogs back on top in the 63rd minute with a driving shot, for his second goal of the game. Although Mercy would apply pres- sure for the remaining 17 minutes they never created a true scoring chance. In the 88th minute, Murillo broke down the right side, then slowed down play and found Rodriguez to his left. Rodriguez hesitated long enough to find a streaking teammate back on the right side of the field and Oracio Var- gas tucked the ball under the crossbar to seal the Bulldog victory. The teams split their season series 2-2, but the Bulldogs extra game against last place Liberty Christian was the difference. Murillo added a fifth goal in the 80th minute. Christian Mondragon scored for Mercy in the first half. Both teams now wait until Satur- day's Division III playoff draw to find out if they secured a first-round bye as a potential fifth match between the Tehama County rivals looms some- where along the bracket.
