BySeniaOwensby WhenIfirstwalkinto the dimly lit room, I as- sume she is asleep, but since I only have a short amount of time to visit with her, I decide to in- terrupt her afternoon nap. I switch on the lights and walk over to her bed. I shake her arm gently and realize she is already awake—just staring out into space. I put my hand under her chin and turn her head towards me in to order to make eye con- tact. "Hi Mama!" I smile, "I've come for a visit, and I brought you some candy." Her eyes focus on me and she attempts a smile. I open up the candy (which is really a vitamin D and calcium in a cara- mel chewy), and take her hand. As usual, her thumb and forefinger are pressed tightly together. I work at prying her fingers apart enough to place the piece of candy between them. I don't know what Mama is holding on to so tightly in her fingers, and since Mama is suffering from dementia, she can't tell me. My husband, who is as close to her as I am, and I were discussing it one night. I asked what he thought she was holding on to. He thought for a mo- ment then answered, "Re- ality." Her world is comprised of uncertainty and to- tal dependence on those around her. She has no ability to communicate her wants and wishes to her care-givers. She has no choice or will in the mat- ter—when you have noth- ing else, then you need hold on to what you can. She didn't choose it, but that is the reality of her life at this time. As believers, we do have the choice of what we hold onto. There is a passage in the bible that speaks about holding on — "Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and strain- ing toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heaven- ward in Christ Jesus" Phil. 3:12-14. What is it that Paul is pressing on to take hold of? I wondered about it for a long time — what was it that I could, (spiritually speaking), hold tightly be- tween my thumb and fore- finger? In the third chapter of Philippians, Paul talks about his life goals — both past and present. At the beginning of the chap- ter he lists his (consider- able) accomplishments he had pursued in order to obtain righteousness. His zeal for righteousness found in the Law of God had blinded him from rec- ognizing the Righteous- ness God had provided. His words paint a series of chase scenes — racing after — grabbing — losing — racing — grasping — and not letting go. Those he is writing to are being pressured to pursue a goal he knows will lead them in the wrong direction. He tells them that he had already been down that road, gained his prizes — but then discovered they were nothing but rubbish. But then he met Je- sus and realized a righ- teousness that comes from faith in Christ, not the Law. God's righteous- ness opened up a door for new and spiritually worth- while pursuits such as the ones he listed in Phil. 3:10 & 11 "that I may know him and the power of his res- urrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrec- tion from the dead." Paul goes on to say that these goals are worth pursuing even 'pressing on to take hold of'. We can't really know what Mama is griping so tightly, but it does pres- ent a wonderful picture of someone who has noth- ing left to lose and has de- cided to hold on as hard as she can. I still don't know ev- erything Paul means in verses 12 through 14, but one thing I do know, is that as I pursue a relation- ship with Jesus, He will help me "win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Je- sus." GOD TALK Hold on to what you can By John Rogers The Associated Press LOS ANGELES For a thou- sand years China's Cave Temples of Dunhuang were a popular traveler's reststop, marketplace and religious shrine on the fabled Silk Road. Now they are coming to Los Angeles, both in spirit and reality. In an exhibition curators say is unprecedented, three full-scale, hand-painted rep- lica caves have been erected on The Getty Center muse- um's hilltop campus over- looking LA. Nearby, in an adjacent gallery, the museum has as- sembled more than 40 spec- tacularly preserved and priceless artifacts taken from one of the caves, and in still another gallery visi- tors can take a 3-D virtual reality tour of on an actual cave in China, this one filled with life-size sculptures of the Buddha and his entou- rage. "We're trying to help the public understand what this place is, where it is and why it's important,"TimWhalen, director of the Getty Conser- vation Institute, said during a recent tour of "Cave Tem- ples of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art on the Silk Road," which opens Saturday. "By any standard," he added, "Dunhuang is one of the most important heritage places in the world." Indeed, along with the Great Wall and the Forbid- den City, Dunhuang's more than 450 Mogao Caves, as they are also known, were amongthefirstChinesesites recognizedbytheUnitedNa- tions' World Heritage Center in the 1980s. But tucked away on the edge of the Gobi Desert, more than 1,100 miles from Beijing, they are not the eas- iest place in China to get to today. That wasn't the case from the 4th to the 14th centu- ries, when the Silk Road was teeming with travel- ers during the millennium when the caves served as a key rest stop, marketplace and shrine. "I think we all have ro- manticized notions about the Silk Road and peo- ple moving from the east in China all the way to the Mediterranean," Whalen said as he and Marcia Reed, the Getty Research Insti- tute'schiefcurator, reviewed dozens of paintings, draw- ings, sculptures, silk tapes- tries, and handwritten and printed documents in one of the galleries. "But people were moving back and forth," he contin- ued. "There are documents here of Jewish prayers and Christian prayers." Also displayed are sculp- tures of European-looking people, a travel document carried by a monk from In- dia and numerous artistic depictions of the Buddha. Perhaps the most price- less item on display is a scroll of Buddhism's "Dia- mond Sutra," commissioned and dated in 868 by a man named Wang Jie as a gift to his parents. Discovered in one of the caves in 1907, it is believed to be the world's oldest printed book. "As you know, in the West we think Guttenberg in- ventsprinting, butweshould know that in 868 a complete printed book was made in China in woodblock, and that's the 'Diamond Sutra,'" Reed said. Still, it's not her favor- ite piece in the show. She points to "Miraculous Im- age of Liangzhou," a stun- ning, 1,300-year-old silk tapestry, before settling on another 9th century scroll, "The Magic Competition Between Sariputra and Rau- draska." The latter features a competition of supernatu- ral feats between Buddhists andBrahmins, withprinting on one side describing the events depicted in ink and pigment on the other. Two of the three Getty caves were built from the ground up for the exhibition by artists who came to Los Angeles from China's Dun- huang Academy, which col- laborated with The Getty's research and conservation institutes to produce the ex- hibition. The third cave was moved intact from the acad- emy's own museum. Although many items in the actual caves remain in- tact, the site was largely abandoned after shipping moved from the Silk Road to sea lanes in the 1400s. It wasn't until 1900 that they were "rediscovered" by Western explorers, who Whalen said removed about 40,000 treasures from the site's "Library Cave" after paying the monk still there a small fee.
