Ontheair Now that the regular season is over, Stower and the nationally ranked Red Hawks turn their attention to hosting an NAIA Soft- ball National Champion- ship Opening Round on campus on May 16-18. They will host three other teams at the Simpson Softball Field in up to seven games. The community is in- vited to attend any of the games. Learn more at simpsonredhawks.com. Before coming to Simp- son, Stower coached at Foothill High School in Palo Cedro for seven years. He coached American Soft- ball Association girls soft- ball from 1995-2007. Stower and his wife live in Red Bluff and have two adult children. Stower FROM PAGE 1 and five more in the fourth, the Lions built a big lead early and despite three in the fifth and a pair in the sixth, the Warriors couldn't catch up. Travis Gorden was named player of the game for the Warriors, going 2 for 4 with a pair of dou- bles, a run and an RBI; Richie Borges was 1 for 3 with a double, a run and three RBIs; Bryce Baer was 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI; and Nick Ornelas was 0 for 3 with a sacrifice fly, a base on balls and an RBI. Gorden took the loss for the Warriors, giving up five earned runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout over 1.1 innings. Borges gave up two earned on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts over 1.2 innings and Jona- than Ross gave up two hits and two walks and struck out four over three shut- out innings. The loss concludes the regular season for the War- riors, who finished 6-10 overall, 5-3 league, put- ting them in second place behind the league-leading Chester Volcanoes. RED BLUFF 14, CHICO 1 The Red Bluff Spartans base- ball team went on the road to Red Bluff on Friday af- ternoon in a makeup game against the Chico Panthers after Thursday's game in Chico was rained out. Originally scheduled to be played in Chico, Friday's game was moved to Red Bluff due to poor field con- ditions in Chico. As a re- sult, the Spartans played as visitors on their own field, but it didn't phase them, and they romped the Pan- thers 14-1 to finish the reg- ular season. The lopsided win comes after an equally lopsided loss Tuesday to the Pan- thers, 12-0 in Red Bluff. Stats for the game weren't available Fri- day evening, but the No. 3 Spartans (19-8 overall, 8-4 league) are expected to host the No. 6 Oroville Tigers (11-13 overall, 6-4 league) on Tuesday to start the playoffs. Roundup FROM PAGE 1 Ezeli played in only 46 regular-season games with 13 starts as the Warriors set the NBA record with 73 wins. The 26-year-old Ni- gerian had surgery Feb. 8 and didn't play again un- til April 3. "It's been a heck of a ride, to be honest. I really can't complain," Ezeli said of bouncing back from the injury. "I was kind of a lit- tle down. I found out I was injured and I had to have surgery again on another knee. But at the end of the day I have amazing team- mates. Guys like Draymond and everybody on the team come over and wrap their hands around me like, 'We've got you.' And that's very comforting to me, and it motivates me more than anything. "So those 31 games I missed, I just couldn't wait to get back on the court, and mostly just because I wanted to be out there with my brothers." They missed his energy off the bench. On Tuesday, his contri- bution was clutch as the Warriors had to rally back from an early 17-point def- icit and trailed 87-76 going into the fourth for their largest deficit all play- offs heading into the fi- nal 12 minutes. They then held the Trail Blazers to 12 points in the final period. "You've got to give credit to Festus just for being pre- pared. He hasn't been out there for pretty much the entire game, and then we were taking advantage of them and taking coverages with the big men back and starting to take shots and they put him in and had him come up higher be- cause he can move," Blaz- ers guard Damian Lillard said. "I thought Festus did a good job just being a presence." Ezeli will look to build off that in Game 3 on Sat- urday in Portland. Golden State leads the best-of- seven series 2-0. "We made the decision at halftime to give Festus an opportunity, and we knew that was going to happen at some point," coach Steve Kerr said Thursday. "We wanted to give Festus his shot and he played great, so he'll obviously play in Game 3." Ezeli never found a flow during the first-round se- ries against the Rockets, which Golden State won in five games. Kerr called him "very rusty." The big man didn't even play 30 minutes total that round. "He stayed ready, and I'm really proud of him because he hasn't played much lately," Kerr said. Ezeli's teammates know the energy and athleticism he brings when his chances do come. "A true professional. He trusts the process. That is the key to this team, we all trust the process," Green said. "One thing about Coach Kerr and the coach- ing staff, they have a great feeling for how the game is going. He came in today and made a huge impact." Ezeli FROM PAGE 1 team soon, preferably as a starter. "I'm happy," Lincecum said. "I was able to throw strikes with my pitches, stay within myself, com- manded all of my pitches. I only had a couple of misses and they weren't out over the plate, so that's encour- aging for me." One of baseball's best pitchers in his prime, Lincecum won the NL Cy Young Award in 2008 and 2009 and made four All- Star Game appearances. He helped the Giants win three World Series titles in five years and had a pair of no-hitters against San Diego in an 11-month span between the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Lincecum earned his nickname "The Freak" by defying the stereotype of what a big-league pitcher is supposed to be, gener- ating massive amounts of torque with his 5-foot-11, 170-pound frame. Needing a long stride to generate the leverage, Lincecum started having trouble with his hips due to the pounding, seeing his velocity dip and his ERA rise as he was forced to throw mostly with his arm. The right-hander went 7-4 with a 4.13 ERA in 15 starts last season and did not pitch after June 27 due to degenerative issues with his hips. Lincecum had surgery on Sept. 3 and did not sign with a team after finishing up a $35 million, two-year contract last season. He worked through the offseason to rehabilitate his hip and has spent the past few weeks pitching on back fields at the Giants' spring training complex. Lincecum arrived at Scottsdale Stadium about an hour before his session, slipping into the clubhouse as about a dozen fans gath- ered in the parking lot. Lincecum emerged from the clubhouse about 15 minutes before he was schedule to throw, walking down a few steps and hop- ping a short fence down the first base side instead of going through the dug- out. Wearing green shorts with leggings underneath and a black shirt with blue stripes down the sleeves, Lincecum stretched, did some light running and played catch before walk- ing back to the dugout. Lincecum grabbed a box of balls before walking out to the mound as fans stood atop a parking garage be- yond the left field wall to catch a glimpse. He threw a few warmup pitches then went through two sessions with a five- minute break in between. Most of the scouts seemed impressed with his outing, though the big questions are about his health and whether he could do it with live hit- ters at the plate. "This whole process has taken a lot of time," Lince- cum said. "It's been a little rigorous, a little Ground- hog Day-ish, but making it to today and all the work that's been put in to this point today has definitely showed today and I feel good about that." Lincecum's outing was short.
