HEALTH Event for expectant mothers, those planning families By Kathy Bramhall I last wrote that Garden Club, as part of its purpose, includes instructing mem- bers and the public in Cre- ative Floral Design. We fol- low the Creative Design Characteristics laid out by National Garden Clubs, Inc.. Here I share with you more details on these types of de- signs from their handbook for flower shows. This infor- mation will help you plan aheadandbemoreconfident when you prepare your de- sign entries for the Tehama District Fair Flower Show this coming September. As with all art, NGC Flo- ral Designs conform to the six principles of design: Bal- ance, contrast, dominance, proportion, rhythm, and scale. Designers also look at the Elements of Design: Color, form light, line, pat- tern, size, space, andtexture. Creative Designs are eclectic in concept, borrow- ing from different styles and/or periods to create new concepts and forms. Your design is your unique ideas, notacopy.Theserules or lack of rules give you the designer much more free- dom with your creations. You don't have to own stock in a nursery and you don't have to grow your own plant material. Most NGC Creative Designs show re- straint in the amount of plant material and/or num- ber of flowers and other components used; designers think line, rather than mass. As opposed to Traditional Designs, Creative Designs can have more than one fo- cal area and more than one point of emergence. Any part of the design may be dominant—just not so dom- inant that your eye stays fo- cused on that one spot and doesn't move over the whole design. Creative Designs can in- clude non-naturalistic qual- ities and placement—up- side down and backwards is okay! All Designs may have varying degrees of ab- straction—no abstraction, minor abstraction, moder- ate abstraction, and all but Still Life Designs may have a dominance of abstraction. You may use man-made components in your design, but you must always use some plant material/flow- ers. Components and Plant Material may be placed ad- jacent to each other, one be- hind the other, above and below to increase the illu- sion of depth. This place- ment contributes to the rhythm/movement through forms — components and plant materials and space within your design. Components and Plant Materialmusthavecontrast- ing advancing and receding colors and shiny/smooth vs rough textures to create eye movement. You can also in- corporate components hav- ing transparent and/or re- flective qualities. Filler and/or transitional materials are not needed in Creative Design, as struc- tural clarity is important— we want to see the shapes and forms of the plant ma- terials and components that make up your design. This may all sound for- eign, but just think about it while you are planning and executing your designs and it will begin to make sense. I'll have more in later arti- cles. Red Bluff Garden Club in- vites you to our Plant Sale, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. , May 13 and14, at the Union Hall, 12889 Baker Road.
