By Joseph Shufelberger jshufelberger@chicoer.com @JShufelberger on Twitter BUTTE VALLEY Michael Shoe- maker had grown accustomed to making big plays inside Cowan Gym. He might have saved his best one for last. The Butte College sophomore signed a letter of intent to play basketball for UC San Diego on a full-ride scholarship during a brief ceremony Friday held on the court he starred on the past two seasons. "I've been waiting for this moment since I can remember," Shoemaker said. "I felt like I was blessed to come to Butte when I was a senior in high school and now to keep going on is just a blessing." A Corning High graduate, Shoemaker weighed options from a handful of California Col- legiate Athletic Association pro- grams โ€” Chico State's confer- ence โ€” including Cal State East Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills, where his former team- mate at Butte, Arthur Caldwell, played at last season. Shoemaker narrowed his de- cision down to Stanislaus State and the Tritons before ulti- mately deciding on them. "The biggest accomplishment is that I don't have to put any money from my parents' pocket into the school," Shoemaker said. He liked the amount of the offer of course, but also the op- portunity, as UC San Diego will turn over some of its roster. COLLEGE BASKETBALL Butte's Shoemaker signs with UC San Diego SUSANVILLE The Corning Lady Cardinals softball team scored a shutout victory Friday night against the Oroville Tigers, 8-0, after losses to Colusa RedHawks 3-2 and Wheatland Pirates 10-2 earlier in the day at the Lassen Tournament at Lassen College. The Cardinals put up 2 in the second, 3 in the third and an- other 3 in the fifth for the easy win. The Pirates jumped out to an early lead with 5 runs in the bot- tom of the first and the Cardinals just couldn't get the offense go- ing, getting just 2 runs, both in the third, on 5 hits. The RedHawks got out to an early lead, scoring a run in each of the first three innings. The Cardinals came back with a run each in the fifth and sixth but fell short for the loss. On Saturday morning the Car- dinals began play with a 7-6 loss to the Pacheco Panthers. The Panthers scored consis- tently in the middle innings to go up 6-2 heading into the final frame, but the Cardinals came back to tie it going into the bot- tom of the seventh, when the Panthers would plate a run for the win. In the Cardinals' last match- up of the tournament, they went back and forth with league ri- val Central Valley Falcons, tied at 3 after the third. The Falcons put up 3 in the fourth and Corn- ing responded with a run in the fifth. Another Falcon run in the sixth was answered with 4 in the bottom half of the inning from the Cardinals to go up by 1. But 2 runs in the top of the seventh went unanswered and the Fal- cons came away with the win.
