Xor Vang, 69, of Saint Paul, Minnesota, Ze Vue, 41, of Corning and the two drivers were sent to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Another man, Thao Vang, of St. Paul, Minne- sota, was injured but did not need medical assis- tance. The incident shut down both northbound lanes and one southbound lane of the interstate. Vehi- cles from the interstate diverted onto surface streets, snarling traffic throughout Red Bluff for much of the day. Around 5 p.m. Monday the northbound lanes were opened and the vehicles had been removed from the roadway. According to Knox, the SWAT team drove down the south side of an access road, which leads up to the embankment near the creek in between Bidwell School and Red Bluff High School. Knox said he no- ticed what seemed to be hair as he was walking near an overgrown area. He found a way into the overgrown area through the brush and canopy of trees overhead. "At that point, we called the Red Bluff Police De- partment and I held the perimeter," Knox said. He testified that noth- ing was moved before the Department of Jus- tice criminalists arrived. According to Knox, the search started around 9 a.m. and the body was found around 10:45 a.m. Dave Rottenberg, a physical education teacher at Red Bluff High School, also took the stand Mon- day. Rottenberg, who taught a third period freshman girls PE class Feb. 26, 2013, said he saw Bealer and Nichols walking down by the creek. He said his class went for a walk that Tuesday. "We took the path that had the least traffic," Rot- tenberg said. "We went by the mortuary, then Bidwell elementary and took the path across the creek. We saw them closer to the creek on the south side." According to Rotten- berg, it wasn't unusual to see kids roaming around campus since so many are in alternative education. At the time, Rottenberg only identified the two as a male and a female he had seen while the class was on the walk. After see- ing a surveillance video, he identified the man as the same one he had seen that day. After media re- ports came out identifying the man as Bealer, Rotten- berg said realized he did know him. "I was his freshman football coach," Rotten- berg said "I didn't know it was him at the time, I had only said I saw some peo- ple in the creek." According to Rotten- berg, it was shortly after 11 a.m. when he saw Bealer and Nichols by the creek. Rottenberg told the court that he never saw the two talk to each other or have any type of contact with one another. The final witness called to testify Monday was Sgt. Scott Curtis of the Red Bluff Police Depart- ment. According to Curtis, he was advised Feb. 26, 2013, that Nichols was missing. "I was told she may have an iPod in her possession, so we used an application to ping it and find it, but we never located it," Cur- tis said. Curtis said he inter- viewed Bealer on March 2, 2013, which then prompted him to compile a series of video surveil- lance tapes onto a thumb drive for the case. "We wanted to have an idea of where he may or may not have traveled based on statements he made," Curtis said. According to Curtis, the surveillance tapes in- cluded video from Red Bluff High School, the Te- hama County Courthouse and the Circle K store on Jackson Street. The court was shown a series of videos; aside from one that was lost due to a hard drive failure. In these videos, Bealer can be seen on a camera at about 11:02 a.m. near Red Bluff High School walk- ing down Douglass toward the main Red Bluff cam- pus. Just a few minutes later Nichols is seen walk- ing past the high school shed where the buses are housed. In the next set of videos, Bealer can be seen entering the student park- ing lot, headed south, with Nichols following shortly after. According to Curtis, there was another video that wasn't shown to the court. Curtis said that in that video Bealer is seen at the Juvenile Justice Center at around 11:58 a.m. In the next video, Bealer is seen entering the Te- hama County Courthouse at around 1:27 p.m. and doesn't leave until 1:56 p.m. According to Curtis, Bealer can be seen enter- ing Jackson Heights school at about 2:35 p.m. Curtis said that was the video lost in the hard drive crash, but he did have a chance to watch it before it was lost. Bealer is seen again on Circle K surveillance video passing by the front of the store at 4:01 p.m. and then again when he is leaving the store an hour later at 5:01 p.m. Janie Reitan, who was Nichols' science teacher with the education out- reach program at the time of her disappearance, took the stand. "She showed up for her meeting with her teachers beginning at 10 a.m.," Re- itlan said. "Seeing all the teachers would usually only take about 30 to 40 minutes. Marysa was on time that day and she was quiet and respectful, like she always was." Bealer's trial is sched- uled to continue at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Department 27.
