I t is said that if you can make something you love your job, it won't feel like work. So consider Clinton Kelly of ABC's daytime lifestyle series "The Chew" a pretty relaxed guy these days. "I did 10 years of a show called 'What Not to Wear,' which was old-school reality TV, which was one week of shooting for every one hour of television," the 47-year-old Connecticut resident explains. "So on some level, I feel like I've been on vacation for the last five years doing the two because it really just doesn't feel like work. The five of us adore each other so much to the point where it's almost gross. And we have fun. We literally spend our day cooking for each other and laughing at each other and it doesn't get to be a grind." Thursday, May 5, Kelly and fellow co-hosts Mario Batali, Michael Symon, Carla Hall and Daphne Oz mark the show's 1,000th episode. At this writing, little information was available as to what that would entail and Kelly was reluctant to get into details. But the show will be taped the day prior before an audience of invited guests, which Kelly expects will include husband Damon Bayles as well as his 96-year-old grandmother. Over the show's five years, the versatile Kelly has worn many hats, serving as its expert on crafts, decorating, gardening and cocktails; resident celebrity interviewer and creator of recipes (with celebrities). He names Olivia Newton-John, Vanessa Williams, Angela Bassett and Patti LaBelle as being among his most memorable interviews. "Something I've learned about celebrities from doing the show is they're just human beings who like to eat, some of them like to cook," he says. "... I find that the celebrities who like food the most seem to be the most down-to-earth ones. There's something about that. I think there's like a family connection there, like they're the most grounded because they had a tradition of eating dinner with their families every night." BY GEORGE DICKIE What book are you currently reading? "I'm reading 'The Thorn Birds.' I don't know why. I just found it in my pile of books. I don't know where it came from but I paid 60 cents for it evidently and have had it on my bookshelf for a long time and so I'm 200 pages into 'The Thorn Birds.' " What did you have for dinner last night? "I had some halibut. What was the sauce? It had raspberries and I can't remember. I had a couple of glasses of wine (laughs). ... I was catching up with an old friend, so the food was kind of secondary ... ." What is your next project? "I am finishing up a book that I've been writing for a couple of years. It's not a food book but it's a book of short, humorous essays about my life, some crazy things that have happened to me. It's called 'I Hate Everyone Except You.' I've got to finish editing it. ... It'll be published in January of 2017." When was the last vacation you took, where and why? "I went to Turks and Caicos. I went and did some snorkeling, just hanging out on the beach. ... There's a local spot called Mr. Grouper and I had some blackened grouper. I had some coconut-crusted snapper. I had these conch fritters that were amazing and had the best thick rum drinks there. It was so good. Other than that, I didn't love the food there but that Mr. Grouper was delicious."
