ByMichaelR.Blood and Nicholas Riccardi TheAssociatedPress BURLINGAME Donald Trump took his outsider campaign to the inner sanctum of California's Re- publican party on Friday, making his case directly to the GOP's state convention even as angry demon- strators shadowed him. Trump spoke for about 30 min- utes in a basement banquet hall in this town just outside San Francisco. It was the sort of small- scale interaction with party activ- ists and donors that he has gen- erally eschewed for grander ral- lies. Trump made his pitch as the nominating calendar moves toward its end game in the na- tion's most populous and diverse state — which, with 172 delegates at stake on June 7, could decide CALIFORNIA CONVENTION Trumpmakes case to GOP insiders amid chaotic protest California is seeing an increase in drug overdose deaths and it is suspected these overdoses and deaths were the result of con- sumption of a drug that strongly resembles the prescription drug Norco, but actually contained an undetermined amount of fen- tanyl, a powerful synthetic drug much more potent than mor- phine. HEATHER HOELSCHER — DAILY NEWS By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF For two days, Red Bluff High School students got to experience what it was like to lose a member of the student body, but thankfully it was just a simulation brought through the Every 15 Minutes program. Every 15 Minutes is a pro- gram designed to help teens think about the consequences that come with drinking and driving or texting and driv- ing, said California Highway Patrol Officer Troy Somavia. It's something that can impact an entire community when the life of a teen is lost or they are seriously injured. The program, which starts with pulling teens out of class followed by someone reading a eulogy for them every 15 min- utes throughout the day sym- bolizing the statistic at the time the program began that every 15 minutes someone dies in a crash. In the case of a DUI, as a result of their choices or those of others. After the eulogy, the stu- dent returns to class wearing a white mask and does not inter- act with their friends or those around them. The program, which the CHP coordinated with the help of other local law enforcement and first re- sponders, has not been done in at least five years in Red Bluff, said CHP Red Bluff Area Com- mander Lt. Lou Aviles. "It's a fantastic program, which we work hard to prepare for with hundreds of hours put in to put this together," Aviles said. "We do this program to teach the kids the conse- quences of their decisions.
