Do it afraid In the self-help world, there is a lot of talk about fear. Fear is a reptilian aspect of our brain designed to keep us in the cave and away from the Saber-toothed tiger. Though we have long since left the cave, that part of our survival mech- anism remains. Fear is part of our everyday lives. Adrenaline junkies feel it, stay at home moms feel it and kids on their first day of school feel it. A big part of the self-help market is focused on facing your fears, confronting them and challenging them to a duel. I say, do it afraid. I say if you have fear, it is ok. You simply can't erase your DNA and make yourself not afraid, but you can do it afraid. Most fear is based on the unknown; what is foreign to our experience. Have you ever known someone afraid of the water, cross- ing bridges or to fly? Their fear is specific to them. You have your own set of fears, irrational as they may be, they are very real to you. Instead of trying to conquer your fear before you take a step, why not walk into the fear and modify yourself as you go? Do it afraid. If fear is based on the unknown or the supposi- tion that something bad or negative will happen, step into it and see what you get. As I have said before, you do not need to be fearless, you need to fear less. What do you dare to dream but allow fear to keep you from? What do you see passing by as you live your life without accomplishing the things that you want? What are the elements of fear associated with your dreams? That you aren't good enough, talented enough or educated enough? That you can't for a multi- tude of reasons such as your age, your income or your commitments to others? Do it afraid. Take a step in the direction towards what you want. In my coaching practice, I help people see their potential. I help people identify what they want out of life. In the beginning, they mostly sense that they can't do what they really want to, but over time they see that there is nothing they can't do if they really want to. So can you. Want to lose weight but are afraid that you can't? Do it afraid. Want to leave a relationship that isn't working? Dot it afraid. Want to leave the job that you hate? Do it afraid. Want to make a change in your life? Do it afraid. Once you begin to step into the fear, you will see that you are more capable than you knew and the sit- uation isn't nearly as scary as you thought. What's more is that the feeling of achievement of what you want- ed feels far more powerful than the fear. Fear is inevitable, change is inevitable, growth is inevitable, do it afraid. Donations needed The Tehama County Resource Conservation District's free workshop, No-Till Gardening, will be held 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13. The workshop is open to everyone and will be held at the Tehama Dis- trict Fairground Jr. Art Building. A soil conditions eval- uation lab will be includ- ed during the workshop. Bring your own lunch, and if you'd like your soil tested, bring a quart size plastic bag of soil from your property for pH and texturing analysis. No-till gardening, also known as no-dig or lasagna style gardening, consists of layering organic materials on top of the soil to create a nutrient rich environment for your plants. Gardeners traditionally dig or turn over the top layer of soil to get rid of weeds, and make it easier to plant crops. There is a complex beneficial rela- tionship that exits between the soil surface and the underlying micro- organisms. Once estab- lished, a no-till garden does not disturb the soil surface. The layers of organic material help to conserve moisture, reduce weeds, build up the soil and reduce erosion. Workshop topics will include presentations on no-till gardening methods and garden maintenance. We'll discuss how to cre- ate your own no-till gar- den and construct a no-till garden for demonstration purposes. Other topics presented will include winterizing your garden, soil condition and hands- on soil testing, compost- ing with worms, carbon sequestration and water- shed stewardship. This is the first of three workshops the district is offering on gardening, landscaping and creating defensible space from wildfire around your home. If you live in Tehama County, on the east side of the Sacramen- to River, ask about our free Yard and Garden Evaluations. Interested parties are asked to RSVP for the workshop.
