"They picked us up at our hotel in a limousine and gave us corsages, and then we were presented with our 50-year pins during the dinner event," she exclaimed. Marge, who lives in Austin, Texas, Colleen McCorkle Morris '58 of Brentwood, Tennessee, and Jackie Abelson Dzicek '58 of North Miami, Florida, began their reunion with a slumber party at Colleen's farm near Kansas City before driving to Columbia. The three were very impressed by the current chapter members. "The girls are prettier, taller, and more self-confident than we were," said Jackie. "We were teenagers," Colleen chimed in. "And we were obedient and naïve and did what we were told," Jackie continued. Sitting around the chapter house library, the three women reminisced about their pledgeship. "We had to learn the Greek alphabet and the chapter roll and the names and hometowns of all the actives. We had to go to church every Sunday and bring back the bulletin to prove that we were there," recalled Colleen. Jackie wondered if the whole chapter of 300+ members ever gets all together and how a freshman could get to know a senior. Val Lawlor '71 and Marcia Jones Lane '73, who were in on the conversation, explained that chapter meetings are now held in a University building and that committees consist of members from each class. Most meaningful of all, the visiting alumnae lauded their experiences as students in the chapter. Marge remembered how her self-esteem was boosted when she was elected corresponding secretary and discovered that someone felt that she was a person of value. Colleen said, "The Alpha Phis were women like me. Even though the University had 22,000 students, it seemed like a small place because you didn't need to know all of them—you could just know the women in the chapter. This is where I learned leadership and study skills, which I have used all my life." Colleen McCorkle Morris '58, Marge Knights Hultsch, Beta Nu '51, Marge Mohler Lindsey '58, and Jackie Abelson Dzicek '59 during the Red Dress weekend. Colleen, Marge L., and Jacqueline received their 50-year pins during the Gala. Marge H. was a young alumna living in Columbia while the other three were collegians in the chapter. AF
