JaCK sammons, iota iota '74 reCeives signifiCant sig award F or Memphians, Jack Sammons, Iota Iota '74 is a familiar figure in both civic and political circles. He recently received the Significant Sig Award, which is one of Sigma Chi's highest honors. The award recognizes those alumni members whose achievements in their fields of endeavor have brought honor and prestige to the name of Sigma Chi. The Fraternity has recognized more than 1,400 brothers since the award's inception at the 1935 Grand Chapter. Jack is the president of Ampro Industries Inc., and general chairman of Youth Programs, Inc., the governing body of the St. Jude Classic golf tournament. He has served on the boards of various organizations such as the Memphis Zoo, Memphis Fire Museum, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Memphis in May, and many others. Jack was first elected to political office in 1987, and served four terms on the Memphis City Council. He also served as the Interim Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Memphis for Mayors Lowrey and Wharton. Jack was initiated at the University of Alabama in 1974. While in college, Jack served as both the scholarship and recruitment chairman. He left Alabama after three years to return to Memphis to help run his family's business, and went back to college to earn his degree in business from the University of Memphis in 1985. Jack was interested in Sigma Chi even before he attended Alabama. Jack's older sister dated Howard Cowgill '65, whom Jack admired very much. Shortly after arriving at Alabama, Jack met the Interfraternity Council president, who was also a Sigma Chi. He was so impressed that he accepted a bid to pledge Sigma Chi, and moved into the Chapter House 48 hours later. Jack's Sigma Chi experience has been very significant in his life, and he states that Sigma Chi differs from most other fraternities because it is a lifetime commitment. In commenting on his receipt of this award, Jack stated that he was "proud to wear the white cross for 40 years, and this makes it that much more special."
