Continuing the epsilon Kappa legaCy Jere Glover '66 Reflects on Sigma Chi W hen talking to his father about joining a fraternity, Jere Glover '66 was told that members of a fraternity were "weaklings who joined together so they wouldn't have to stand alone." This was not the case when he joined Sigma Chi. The men of Epsilon Kappa had a character that was solid and had the right attitude and spirit to draw him in. While he was an undergraduate, Jere held the role of Consul when academics in the fraternity were not quite the standard that they are today. "Brotherhood is a sharing of common goals and a willingness to help each other, whether that be with other people or academics." He took this into consideration and was instrumental in raising the Chapter's GPA. He developed a plan to improve academics by getting the whole Chapter involved in studying and working together. Jere lives in Annapolis, Maryland, so the drive to Memphis may be a long 17-hours, but he loves coming back to visit the Chapter House and staying connected with his brothers. To him, this is the best way for alumni to stay involved. Epsilon Kappa's alumni involvement is the strongest of any chapter at U of M and it is this long-term commitment that keeps it that way. This dedication to support Epsilon Kappa is what motivated him to support the Legacy of Excellence campaign. With the support of other alumni, he expects that Epsilon Kappa will maintain its current standards of leadership and success. During his time in Sigma Chi, Jere learned many valuable life lessons. "Men are stronger as a unit than as individuals, and tasks can be completed better as a brotherhood." Through the leadership skills he gained, Jere became more confident in working with others and was prepared for his career as a lawyer. Jere is grateful for all that membership in Epsilon Kappa Chapter provided him which is what motivated him to make a significant contribution to the Legacy of Excellence campaign. "You get so much out of the fraternity that you need to make sure to give back in order for others to have those same opportunities." He encourages other alumni to consider the ways that they can give back to ensure the future of our chapter. Today, Jere is married to Doris Henderson Glover and owns his own private practice. His career has afforded him many opportunities to make a real difference in the community. One of his favorite experiences was working on a piece of legislation called the Small Business Innovation Research Act. This act has helped tens of thousands of small businesses by providing around $2 billion dollars a year to help them grow and develop. Jere offers these final words to students and alumni about Sigma Chi: "I want to keep something good going. Don't just make it good for yourself; make it good for other students coming in as well."
