Groundbreaking Set
for Veterans Park
A groundbreaking is set for the downtown State
Veterans Park Thursday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. on
the Parade Field of the Airborne and Special
Operations Museum.
The Fayetteville City Council approved a
construction contractor bid for the park Jan. 11.
ValleyCrest Landscape Development of Durham
came in with the low bid.
The state is paying for the construction of the
park.
The park is scheduled to open July 4, 2011.
Black Heritage Program
Celebrates Black History
Month
Recognizing February as Black History Month, the J.S.
Spivey Recreation Center, located at 500 Fisher St. off
Old Wilmington Road, is hosting the annual Black
Heritage Program Saturday, Feb. 20 at 3:30 p.m.
Going strong for over 12 years, the program features a
theme that focuses on the essence of the program. The
theme for the 2010 program is "It's Time to Embrace."
Musical guests are scheduled to perform, including the
Mighty Sons of Faith, the House of Prayer Church Mass
Choir, the Friendship Baptist Praise Dance Troupe and
the Zawadi Dancers and Drummers. Along with the
performances, poetry reading and history will be shared.
The attendance fee is $3, which covers a souvenir and
light refreshments.
The program is usually well attended, so come early and
get your seat.
Arnette Park Gets Makeover
After 30 years, Arnette Park on Old Wilmington Road is
getting a makeover by Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks
& Recreation staff. An already popular place among
recreation enthusiasts and families, the park is being
spruced up to create "parks within a park," an idea that
could lure more visitors.

History Artifacts
The Fayetteville Area Transportation and Local
History Museum is accepting aviation and
automobile memorabilia donations for its new
annex that will open soon. Museum staff is also
accepting local history artifacts.
For the aviation section, any memorabilia related

is acceptable. Examples include anything related
to Piedmont Airlines or any planes or carriers

Citizens' Academy
Accepting Applications
The City of Fayetteville is accepting applications
for its Citizens' Academy that is scheduled for
Tuesdays from March 30 to May 11. The class
runs seven weeks and helps citizens understand
what goes on behind the scenes to provide
services to residents.
Citizens learn what City departments do and
how they do it through presentations, handouts,
questions and dialogue.
