ByJohnHickey BayAreaNewsGroup NEW YORK Oakland A's starter Kendall Graveman wrote his name into the re- cord books Wednesday night by becoming the first start- ing pitcher ever to bat in new Yankee Stadium. The right-hander's pitch- ing stole the show, however, dominating the evening in the Bronx as the A's stretched their winning streak to four games with a 5-2 victory over the Yankees. Graveman threw a season-high 6 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits, one of them a Didi Gregorius homer, as he pushed the A's back over the .500 level at 8-7. He struck out in his only at-bat, which had the record keepers rummaging through the archives. This version of Yankee Stadium has been open only since 2009, and no starting pitcher had ever had an at-bat. He won't be among the first Buckeyes selected. He is prob- ably a Day 3 pick, but with so many of his close friends leav- ing Columbus, Ohio, after last season, he passed on his final year of eligibility, too. Powell, 22, has already graduated with a degree in sports industry. When he is done playing he would like to be a coach — but he hopes that day is a long way off. Powell has been sharing with The Associated Press his thoughts and experiences with the draft process, his for- mer Buckeyes teammates, and what it has taken him to get this far. And he's been laugh- ing all the way. Powell is re- freshingly jovial and fun-lov- ing. He works an 'LOL' into even the most routine text message, and laughs his way through most conversations. Staff Reports ANDERSON The Corning High School Lady Cardinals softball team grabbed a pair of wins Tues- day over the Anderson Cubs with a 7-5 win in the early game and a 12-10 victory in the late game of a twin bill. The Cardinals went ahead early in the first game, putting up three runs in the first inning and two in the second, then following up with a run each in the third and fourth innings. The Cubs matched the Cardi- nals in the third and fourth and then mounted a late charge with a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh, but would fall short. As of 6:45 p.m. Wednesday no individual stats had been posted for either game. The fourth-place Cardinals (4-9 overall, 2-2 league) are due for a rematch when they host the Cubs (1-9 overall, 0-6 league) at 4 p.m. Friday. While Baalke has been in touch with Kaepernick, he said Wednes- day they haven't spoken in person despite both being at team head- quarters. Kaepernick is around rehabilitating from three surger- ies and attending team meetings during the voluntary portion of the offseason program. Kaepernick was granted per- mission to meet with the Den- ver Broncos after his agents re- quested a trade during the off- season. The Spartans struck first, put- ting up a run in the second inning and another in the fourth, but the Hornets answered with a run in the fifth and tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the seventh to keep their chances alive. The Spartans eventually re- claimed the lead, putting up two runs in the top of the 13th, and then held the Hornets silent to close out the game and the win. Red Bluff's Payton Edwards had a hot bat, going 3 for 5 and scoring once, while laying down a sacrifice bunt and walking. Lane Pritchard went 2 for 7 with an RBI; Kolby Button went 2 for 7; Wes Clawson went 1 for 4 with two walks; Ryan Gamboa was 1 for 3 and Tanner Tweedt was 1 for 4 with a run scored. Eric Spencer scored twice, Austin Youngblood had a sacrifice and a base on balls and Bryce Sinclair walked twice. Clawson started the game on the mound and threw five in- nings, giving up an unearned run on three hits, walking three and striking out six. Button took over in the sixth and pitched six innings, giving up an earned run on five hits, with two walks and struck out six. Pritchard closed out the game and got the win with two innings of no-hit pitching, with two walks and struck out three. The second-place Spartans (15-6 overall, 5-2 league) are due for a rematch when they host the Hornets (12-11 overall, 0-7 league) at 7 p.m. Friday. Next week will see a pair of games against third-place Pleas- ant Valley in Red Bluff at 7 p.m. Tuesday and in Chico at 4 p.m. Friday. Othergames The Corning Cardinals (5-7 overall, 3-2 league) are scheduled to face the Central Valley Falcons (6-12 overall, 1-4 league) at 4 p.m. Friday at Shasta Lake.
