www.cityoffayetteville.org Celebrate Historic Preservation Month Downtown! With buildings that date back to the 18th century, Downtown Fayetteville not only has the best in shopping and dining, it also has a rich history that begs to be explored. From the Market House, to the brick sidewalks of Hay Street, to Liberty Point and beyond, there is history and historical markers at most corners. May is Historic Preservation Month and it is time to plan a trip to streets behind the events, shops and restaurants. Downtown Fayetteville is designated as a historic district with local landmark designations. An active Historic Resources Commission, established in 1986, oversees the appearance of existing buildings and new construction within the district in order to maintain the designation as a historic district and preserve and protect the character of Fayetteville's historic and architectural resources. This commission is comprised of 11 members appointed by City Council and each member has demonstrated either a special interest or a background in history or architecture. Historic preservation is important in a downtown area because these are the buildings that make downtown unique and helps preserve our nation's treasures for future generations. To explore Fayetteville's vast history, take a self-guided walking tour and stop at the historical markers and monuments that line the way or visit our history museums downtown. Museums include the Airborne and Special Fayetteville Area Transporation and Local History Museum and the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex, which includes museum galleries, Arsenal Park and the 1897 Poe House. All have low-priced admissions, if not free, and offer a wealth of knowledge for you and your family. For a more in-depth look, book a tour with Historic Properties Manager Bruce Daws at 433-1457 and discover the history of local landmarks while walking in the Advanced notice and reservations are required for group tours and experiences can be shortened, lengthened or tailored to meet your group's needs.
