ther-in-law, Frank Moore, work around the grounds, making sure grandstands, chutes and other struc- tures are in good repair. Getting the arena dirt just right is a science, Bradley said, and one of the goals is to not have dust blowing on fans. "It makes the show bet- ter when people aren't sit- ting in the dust, and it's better for the animals," Bradley said. Rain also affects the dirt and may cause the crew to come to work earlier. Bradley takes nine days of of unpaid vacation from his job at Ben's Truck and Equipment to work the ro- deo. But he is quick to em- phasize that others do as much as he does. "There are a lot of peo- ple out there that deserve the Top Hand (Award)," Bradley said. And he doesn't mind spending time at the Round-Up. "It's time I dedicate to the Round-Up that I don't get paid for. But it's all good. It's something I enjoy." During the rodeo, Brad- ley can be found outside the arena, in an easily ac- cessible place in case he's needed to water down roads or for whatever task needs to be done. He watches the rodeo on the big replay screen at the south end, making a few quick trips to see his kids in the box seats where they sit. He is apprecia- tive of receiving the Top Hand Award. "There's a lot of peo- ple who deserve it, but I just happened to get it this year," Bradley said. "I was happy to get it. It's an honor. There are a lot of people who do a lot of (volunteer) stuff, and we do it for nothing, to make the rodeo work." Bradley was presented with a special buckle at the Round-Up Appreci- ation Dinner on April 9. "It was great," he said. "It was really cool. I'll cher- ish the buckle." Bradley and the crew will have the dirt in place, and all parts will be ready when the Round-Up con- tinues today and Sunday. Chevrolets to a show and took the top three places. Murray's love for 1958 Chevrolet Impalas began when he was 12 years old and saw his first '58 Impala while with his mother one day. "I said to myself, wow that is the most beautiful car I've ever seen," Murray said. Murray has owned his shop since 1971, a year after he moved to Red Bluff from Ohio. Since then he has re- stored six '58 Impalas and has sold two, with his first restoration being in 1995. Someofhisfondestmem- ories involve his time work- ing and restoring '58 Impa- las to the exact condition as they were made, Murray said. "Making a living doing what you love...I just really have no bad memories," Murray said. He has had a lotofgreattimescompeting and restoring classic car of all kinds at his shop. Winning to Murray means a great deal, he said. The car is certified as being completely authentic and winning competitions like this shows that the crafts- man work that goes into re- storingsuchararevehicleis not going unnoticed. Judges at these compe- titions go over every detail of the vehicle to ensure it is the exact same as in 1958, Murray said. He even men- tioned that the few points he got taken off his score, which his score was 986 out of 1,000, was because of the small stamp on the window of the Impala not being 100 percent accurate. Murray's '58 Impala was featured in a calendar by the Classic American Mus- cle car club and has been featured on a variety of newspaper and magazine articles and television pro- grams. Murray plans to continue restoringChevroletImpalas in the future and may com- pete again in June at the Summer National Chevro- let Classic show in Indiana.
