OurGodisaverytalk- ative Deity, mostly full of words describing His love and plans. There are times He says things we don't want — but deeply need — to hear. Last sum- mer when the Supreme Court overtly ignored the Constitution to mandate gay marriage He told me to sacrifice a sacred cow. While I walked down a hallway of the Califor- nia State Capitol He said to give thanks for the de- cision. He said He en- abled this decision so the Church would have to be- come the Church — no longer be able to hide be- hind sacred cows like the Constitution, the rule of law, or even a social con- sensus. We are stripped of secular backing. We are left with nothing but the authority of a God who creates and destroys em- pires, and Who fights by shedding His own blood first. Make no mistake; the King of the Universe is plenty upset with judges and others who defy His blueprint for humanity simply because they can. But He is so passionately concerned for the integ- rity of the people who are called by His Name that He will sacrifice any- thing — beginning with His Son — to call us back to dependence on Him. That is what He was say- ing to me and my team about the SCOTUS deci- sion on marriage. Now, in this time of nascent Great Awakening, He calls on us to sacrifice the sacred cows on which we depend more than on Him. The concept of sacred cows originates with Hin- dus eating no beef be- cause they believe cows sacred. The popular west- ern image refers to any counter-productive prac- tice slavishly adhered to, i.e. Hindus deny them- selves a primary source of nutrition by their super- stitious regard for bovine life. In a Great Awakening Christians need to under- stand that we can substi- tute a goodly shadow of God, — like Hebrews 10:1 and the idolatry of the Old Covenant sacrificial code — for the best real- ity of God Himself. When this happens the shadow becomes just another idol — another substitute for God Himself — ripe for sacrifice in favor of the really real Father, Son and Spirit. Sacred cows rarely be- gin as bad things. God re- cently gave me a vision of a banner stretched across a football field. Banners are stretched so the home team can electrify fans by bursting through them. This banner represented Aslan — from the Narnia Chronicles. Suddenly the banner burst and the real Aslan leapt through the demolished fabric. Point taken — the real thing is always superior to the mere representation. Sa- cred cows need to be sac- rificed only when they be- come substitutes for the real Aslan — or the real God. Many leaders say God has a serious contro- versy with America — our thirst for innocent blood through abortion, cove- nant breaking and gov- ernment lawlessness, sex- ual sin, and idolatry — make it so. But God's beef is not with America. It is with the American Church. It is with Ameri- cans who — like the bibli- cal Pharisees — know bet- ter and defy God anyway. It is with the 90% of Bi- ble-believing pastors who refuse to address politi- cal/ethical issues; the two thirds of evangelicals who neither vote nor advocate; and the hypocrites who call themselves Chris- tians while disbelieving the fundamental truths of the Faith. His issue is with Christians whose personal life is indistin- guishable from the rest of humanity. There is no more hiding behind hy- pocrisy any more than be- hind constitution, court, or consensus. We have a lot of sacred cows to sac- rifice if we would again be a sacred people. During the Fall 2015 Trifecta of Repentance along the American West Coast God called me to sacrifice my clergy collar. It is a good thing, that collar. It identifies me as a minister; it gets me into places others cannot go — hospital ICUs and jails — and it reminds me that I am not my own. But the Lord asked me to let go of everything but Him as my repentance — my re-focus of attention to His face. When I removed and laid it on the floor as an offer- ing the Holy Spirit broke out and everyone in the room was hit by the love, the joy and the glory. What is your sacred cow? Is it doctrine that makes you think yourself right and others wrong? Is it remembered glory like Azusa Street, the Latter Rain Movement — the Jesus People per- haps? Is it a refined way of doing ceremony that makes you more cultured and finessed than others? Whatever it is, it began as a beautiful banner. It is time to let it go. The real Aslan — the real Lord Jesus — is ready to burst out whether we are ready or not. A judge has dismissed a Nebraska in- mate's lawsuit that claimed he was denied his right to worship the divine Flying Spaghetti Monster, and that he was mocked and faced discrimination for his faith. Stephen Cavanaugh sued the Department of Correc- tional Services and pen- itentiary officials in 2014 seeking $5 million and a court order mandating that inmates who practice FSMism receive the same rights and privileges as in- mates who practice other religions. U.S. District Judge John Gerrard dismissed the law- suit on Tuesday. He said in his ruling that "FSMism" is not a religion as outlined by federal law, but "a parody intended to advance an ar- gument about science, the evolution of life and the place of religion in public education." Gerrard said those issues are important and that FS- Mism contains a serious ar- gument, "but that does not mean that the trappings of the satire used to make that argument are entitled to protection as a 'religion,'" the Lincoln Journal Star (http://bit.ly/1SCqb7C ) re- ported. He also said Cavanaugh, 24, didn't sufficiently back up claims that he had been prevented from exercising his religion while serving time in the Nebraska State Penitentiary on assault and weapons charges. Cavanaugh claimed prison staff discriminated against him by refusing to allow him to meet for wor- ship services and classes, to wear religious clothing and pendants and to re- ceive communion. He said staff mocked and insulted his faith. Gerrard determined that prison staff considered Ca- vanaugh's request in good faith "and concluded, rea- sonably, that FSMism was satirical and required no accommodation." "This case is difficult be- cause FSMism, as a par- ody, is designed to look very much like a religion," he said.
