The Spartans (13-5 overall, 4-2 league) are scheduled to play a pair on the road against the Bear River Bruins (10-7-1 overall, 6-3 league) start- ing at 1 p.m. Saturday in Grass Valley. Baseball FROM PAGE 1 CHIP THOMPSON — DAILY NEWS Evan Tanner was one of four Spartans pitchers used to no-hit the Willows Honkers Thursday evening. J.B. Bickerstaff of Curry: "If he's able to run freely in space, he's too good. So you've got to be in his air- space all night long. He's got to know at the end of the night that whoever was guarding him was there." Curry's eyes lit up when asked if he likes such a de- fensive challenge, and he described Beverley simi- larly to the way Kerr did. But it's defense, according to the reigning MVP, that has been the key to the Warriors' success against the Rockets. The Warriors will need to step up on that end of the floor while facing James Harden, the NBA's No. 2 scorer behind Curry averaging 29 points per game. Harden take over games on offense and is adept at drawing fouls. Kerr noted that Harden led the league in free throw attempts by far, as the All-Star had 837 of them — 174 more than anyone else. "You can't reach," said Thompson, who will be the main defender on Harden. "You've got to stay disci- plined and go straight up. Definitely don't reach on him. You've got to lock in every possession. You can't relax. He can score in bunches." Said Bickerstaff: "Peo- ple see him getting to the free throw line, peo- ple think it's flopping. But James, he's figured it out. There's an art to what he does. He's found the loop- hole in the rules." Harden said the eighth- seeded Rockets were con- fident going into the se- ries. They disappointed with a 41-41 record, and saw coach Kevin McHale fired midseason. But Harden didn't back down when asked about facing a 73- win team to start the play- offs. "That's what basket- ball's about," Harden said with a laugh. "You've got to face them anyways no matter whether it's first round or Western Con- ference finals. We've got a great opportunity, a lot of people counting us out." The Warriors, mean- while, are embracing the expectations and pressure that come with being the favorites to win it all and repeat as champions. First they'll have to get past the upset-minded Rockets, who are looking for payback after the War- riors stopped them short of the NBA Finals. "You can't take 'em lightly," Thompson said. "They got there last year for a reason. Same core, almost the same entire roster. So they've got tal- ent, and they can really score the ball, and we've just got to act like it's do or die." Warriors FROM PAGE 1 we did a good job break- ing out versus that pres- sure and hope to continue that." After the first whis- tle of Thursday's game, Kings forward Milan Lu- cic skated toward Sharks' defenseman Marc-Ed- ouard Vlasic and tapped him a couple times on the leg. It perhaps a not- so-subtle hint that he and other players in black and silver might try to find out how healthy Vlasic's lower body really is after he was injured in mid-March. Vlasic absorbed a hand- ful of big hits in Game 1, but otherwise didn't look like a player who had missed 12 straight games. "It's not easy yester- day when guys are trying to run you through the boards and take you out," Vlasic said. "Communica- tion and good support. We looked at the video and we had good support. That's why it seemed easy was because everybody was in the right spot." With an average of over three hits per games, Lu- cic has earned a reputa- tion as one of the harder players to skate against. He had three hits, in- cluding one in open ice on Hertl, and two assists Thursday. "That's part of his game. It's no secret," Pav- elski said of Lucic. "He likes to play physical, he likes to forecheck and he does a good job of it. So you to buy a little space if you can and move the puck quick. A couple passes will hopefully be able to break that." One area Los Ange- les will likely focus on is winning draws and faceoff coverage. The Sharks lost 12 of 18 faceoffs in the first period, but won 26 of the final 41 draws, including ones by Joel Ward in the second period and Pavel- ski in the third that led to San Jose goals. "We're going to get a big response from L.A. They're going to be better," Sharks coach Pete DeBoer said. "We played a good road game, good enough to win. But I think we have another level, too." Sharks FROM PAGE 1 In the Bulldogs' half of the inning, Allan Garman led off with a single to left and Cameron Schmidke was hit by a pitch. A sac- rifice bunt moved Gar- man and Schmidke to sec- ond and third and Duncan walked to load the bases. A Hardy single scored 2 and a passed ball brought a third run home to put the Bull- dogs up 9-4 at the end of five. Ornelas led off the sixth for the Warriors with a sin- gle to left, Datagnan King- well walked and Will Nel- son singled to left to score Ornelas. Gorden walked to load the bases and Borges hit a long sac fly to left to score Kingwell from third. TheWarriorswerewithin3, down 9-6. Schmidkesingledtodeep center with two on to score aBulldogs'insurancerunin the sixth. But it wouldn't be enough. McClellan started the seventh for the Warriors with a single to right and Ornelas walked before the next two batters struck out. But Kingwell walked to load the bases, Nelson was hit by a pitch to send McClellan home, Gorden walked to score Ornelas and Borges walked to plate Kingwell. Bryce Baer dou- bled to score 3 and give the Warriors their first lead of the game. Baer would steal third and score on an er- rant throw before a strike- out ended the rally. Now down by 3, the Bull- dogs got their own rally go- ing after a quick first out with a Dean single, Orozco walk, Tyler Winter single and walks from Garman and Schmidke to score 2. But with the bases full of Bulldogs a double play ball back to the mound ended the game. Hardy pitched well for the Bulldogs, giving up 6 runs on 9 hits with 9 strike- outs and just 4 walks. Baer startedfortheWarriorsand gaveup6runson6hitswith 4 strikeouts and 3 walks over 3 innings. Ross took over in the fourth and gave up 4 runs on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts and 3 walks. The Warriors (3-7 overall, 2-1 league) are scheduled to host the Redding Christian Lions(5-5overall,1-1league) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dia- mond Park. The Bulldogs (6-4 over- all, 2-2 league) are sched- uled to host the American Christian Academy Eagles (6-8 overall, 2-0 league) at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
