Don Hanley came from Washington, as he does every year, to act as the master of ceremonies and introduced the local and out-of-town poets. The evening gave audiences a largely funny and enter- taining experience from talented poets, including Randy Rainwater and Bill Hooton of Red Bluff, Da- vid Harwood of Chico, Ronnie Brackett of Cot- tonwood, Tom Wiedel of Corning and Keith Trent of Redding. The cowboy poets re- cited original and well known poetry and Brack- ett brought his guitar to sing country music. The audience was amused as many of the poems were comedic. Wiedel even re- cited one of his favorite funny poems about hav- ing to buy his wife a bras- siere. Others had political poems, including a few about presidential candi- dates Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. Some poems were about the special bond between a man and his horse and some were about loss. Rainwater had a few po- ems on respecting your- self and how beautiful the sunset is in the West. Brackett, a regular, said he enjoys performing and reciting his poems at the Cowboy Poetry gathering each year. "I always have so much fun," Brackett said. The event was a suc- cess, despite getting smaller every year, said Librarian Sally Ain- sworth, event coordina- tor. She said she hopes it can change dates within the 11 Days of Round-Up next year to avoid compet- ing with the Barrel Races held on the same evening.
