Wildauer, who retired five years ago, will fill in the gap between when Tehama County Planning Director Sean Moore's contract, which is not be- ing renewed, ends on April 30 and a new plan- ning director is appointed. The contract, which sets a rate of $48.18 per hour for about 20 hours a week, but not to exceed 40 hours a week, runs from May 1 through Sept. 30. Signs in front of the center stated "There's No Excuse for Child Abuse, so...Stay Calm and Chill Out (with a blue snow cone)" and "Help us put the freeze on child abuse" as part of the effort to spread the word. The goal is to create awareness throughout the month, said Tina Robertson, secretary for the Child Abuse Prevention Council for Tehama County. The council, in partnership with St. Elizabeth Community Hospital, is kicking off the new PUR- PLE Crying Project in an effort to educate new parents on the period of an infant's life where they cry excessively, and often without a reason, which could lead to the devastating effects of Shaken Baby Syndrome, Robertson said. The acronym PURPLE stands for Peak of cry- ing, Unexpected, Resists soothing, Pain-like face, Long lasting and Evening. This infant's age range where the excessive cry- ing can occur is between 2 weeks and 4 months, Robertson said. The project aims to enhance positive parent- ing skills to cope with crying and protect the vul- nerable infants. There are many classes offered through the council for information on this syndrome and RED BLUFF Aprilis ChildAbuse Prevention Month PHOTOSBYJULIEZEEB-DAILYNEWS Janet Lemmons, of Cowboys and Kids, asks questions of Bidwell Elementary School students Wednesday during a Jeopardy-style game teaching students about the Code of the West. The program is designed to use rodeo and the western lifestyle to teach kids about making wise choices and the history of rodeo while mo- tivating kids to stay away from drugs and gangs and to stay healthy. A cowboy and rodeo theme is the backdrop for the more important mes- sage, says Janet Lemmons, a presenter with Cowboys and Kids. "The rodeo part gets their attention," Lemmons said. "Our Cowboy Up segment is about making your own path, making good choices, staying away from drugs and gangs and not being pressured to do what every- one else is doing." On Wednesday morning, Lemmons visited Bidwell El- ementary School where she talked about her job trav- eling the Western United States. "I teach about rodeo and something that's very im- portant to cowboys," Lem- mons said. "That's the Code of the West."
