you're on top, Curry in- sisted, then shrugged it off. He can silence them all soon enough. "It's a big deal for sure," Curry said. "It's our last regular-season game, our last tuneup before the play- offs and nobody wants to lose their last game going into the playoffs if you can avoid it, and obviously 73. We want to get that num- ber. Why not?" Curry and coach Steve Kerr expected the Warriors to be better this season, but this good? No way. This many wins? Hardly. Not with every opponent bring- ing its best every night. Triple-double machine Draymond Green can't be- lieve Golden State's posi- tion now, either. He wishes the record hadn't come down to the regular-season finale. "It would have been cool to take care of the games we were supposed to take care of and have it already out of the way," Green said. "The way this thing has played out, to be at home with one shot at it, it's pretty amazing. You can't not talk about it at this point. The whole world's talking about it now. It's ev- erywhere. There's no way to hide from it now. Hon- estly, realistically, I didn't think it could be done." While Kerr missed Tues- day's practice for a doctor's appointment, the Warriors were on task and enjoyed hosting Los Angeles Angels sluggers Mike Trout and Albert Pujols along with infielder Cliff Pennington and reliever Joe Smith, who beat Curry at PIG. It kept the mood light with much still at stake this week. "We have an opportu- nity to do something that has never been done in his- tory," Curry said. "So many great players have suited up since the NBA began. For us 15 guys to say we've accomplished something as a group that's never been done before, that's remark- able. We earned the right to have a 48-minute game to eclipse that mark and we have to go out and finish the job, do it the right way. ... To be in this position is special. It makes you ap- preciate all the work that's gone into it, the sacrifice, the good decisions from upstairs. You want to en- joy the moment for sure." On the air That low-key attitude is appreciated by his team- mates, who say they are more likely to see him get mad playing a game of cards than from anything that happens on the ice. "Nothing gets him really rattled," coach Peter De- Boer said. "He's the same way around the dressing room as he looks on the ice. He's a real calming in- fluence on people around him, which is a great char- acteristic to have as a start- ing goalie." After spending his first two seasons as the backup in Los Angeles, Jones joined the Sharks this past offseason. He was originally dealt to Boston before the Sharks acquired him last summer in a deal for a first-round pick and a prospect. Jones quickly signed a $9 mil- lion, three-year contract and lived up to the lofty expectations in his first season as a starter. Jones went 37-23-4 with a 2.27 goals against average as he proved he could han- dle the heavy workload of a starter. "He's a huge reason why we've had success this year," teammate Patrick Marleau said. "He's been great all year for us, mak- ing key saves, a lot of big saves throughout the whole season. Very calm, goes about his job. It's comfort- ing to know he's back there and he'll make those key saves at key times." After two decades spent dazzling the world, Bryant will end his basketball ca- reer at home with the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednes- day night. He'll walk off the court in front of his de- voted fans in the building where he hung five cham- pionship banners. He retires this week as the third-leading scorer in league history. Nobody ever got to spend 20 sea- sons with one NBA team before the 37-year-old Bry- ant, and he intends to thank Los Angeles with one last display of his tran- scendent talent. "It means everything" to finish at home, Bryant said. "I grew up a die-hard Laker fan, so it's like a dream come true for a kid to grow up and play for his favorite team, and play here for 20 years, his en- tire career," he added. "I've seen the city grow. I've seen the city develop, and vice versa. There's no place I'd rather end my career." Tickets are reselling for hefty sums, and mer- chandise commemorating the day is moving briskly. Fans without seats will gather downtown to show love for Bryant, a globally admired athlete who both fearlessly represented and strongly resembled LA. Flashy. Confident. Clever. Combative. Burst- ing with ambition. And always entertain- ing. "I've grown up in front of this crowd from the age of 17," Bryant said. "A lot of faces that I saw in the crowd in my very first game are still here. That's very special. Kids that are sitting there now, that were kids when I first came in, now come to the game with their kids. You know, that's pretty cool to see." NBA Bryant says farewell a er 20 years with the LA Lakers PAT SULLIVAN — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant will play his final game at home tonight a er two decades. The Giants are flash- ing plenty of it while tak- ing the early edge in the N.L. West. Hunter Pence hit a tiebreaking, two-run shot in the fifth inning be- fore Brown, who only hit his first big league homer Friday night, went deep in the sixth and eighth. Those shots backed Sa- mardzija, who pumped his own power from the mound while holding the Rockies to two runs — one of which scored when left fielder Angel Pagan al- lowed a catchable ball to drop — and striking out five in eight innings. His fastball ticked up to 96 mph as he claimed his first victory as a Giant while showing the form and po- tential that made the club so eager to place a $90 million wager on him this winter. Samardzija used his 92-93 mph cutter, sharp slider and a four-seam fastball that exploded out of his hand like no Giants starting pitcher perhaps since Tim Lince- cum's early days as a base- ball phenom. Samardzija's arsenal was too much for baseball's current darling, Story, who had homered seven times in his first six games. The Giants have their own power streak go- ing. They have hit at least one home run in all eight games — their longest streak in franchise history to begin a season.
