new hampshire beta chapter ΣΑΕ: A Brotherhood for Life Sam R. Reid '77 Reflects on His Experiences T he ΣΑΕ brotherhood is a bond for life. The connections and relationships developed during our undergraduate years have a lasting impact throughout our lives. The friends we make in New Hampshire Beta become the friends we count on to celebrate with us and to help us in times of need. Sam R. Reid '77 still values the friendships he made in ΣΑΕ and maintains those relationships today. When Sam first came to UNH, he already knew a few men from New Hampshire Beta. His experiences helped prepare him for life after college and provided him with valuable communication and leadership skills. "My membership in ΣΑΕ helped give me the confidence and the skills to get involved with other organizations on a leadership level." For a period of time, Sam served as co- chapter advisor for New Hampshire Beta, along with Ben J. Asselin '72. "It was a truly interesting and rewarding experience to work with Ben and get to know the young men in the chapter." Sam enjoyed seeing them experience many of the same meaningful moments that he had as an undergraduate. Over the past several years, many universities have begun to question the worth of fraternity membership. Sam still sees ΣΑΕ as an important part of the college experience and wants others to have that opportunity in the future. "Fraternity membership offers a broad range of experiences that are important for young people today and in the future." He observed first-hand through his own and his son's experiences how valuable the fraternity membership is and he encourages his fellow New Hampshire Beta brothers to get involved. "Alumni support and involvement is essential to ensuring the sustainability of the chapter and that opportunities with ΣΑΕ are available to future generations." Today, Sam is, as he puts it, a "recovering attorney" and financial advisor with Charter Oak Capital Management. He enjoys the opportunity to help his clients achieve their goals. Sam keeps in touch with many of his brothers through Facebook and e-mail, as well as in person. "There are several brothers that, when we see each other in town, we still say 'Phi Alpha' and share the ΣΑΕ handshake." He and his wife, Paula, live in Porstmouth, Mass., and have two children, Joe and Katherine.
