REDBLUFF The Red Bluff Lady Spartans softball team won a tight game Friday afternoon against the visiting Enterprise Hornets 2-1. With each team putting up a run in the first, it wasn't until the fourth inning that the Spartans were able to plate another, and they held onto the narrow margin. WARRIORS 4, CHESTER 10 The Mercy Lady Warriors fell at home to the Chester Volcanoes Friday afternoon 10-4. The Volcanoes went up early, plating 1 in the first and 7 in the second, and a late rally for the Warriors wouldn't be enough. Bryce Sinclair pitched six shutout innings for the Spar- tans and struck out the side in the fifth, giving up 5 hits, a walk and notching 6 strikeouts. But when Foothill's Billy Plummer, hitting in the six hole, reached first to lead off the seventh, Lane Pritchard was brought in for the save. Pritchard got pinch hitter Mitch Menns to pop out foul for the first out then pinch hitter Dominic Tating hit what could have been a double-play ball, but a bobble at the bag at second al- lowed Tating to reach first with two away. A Blake Hibbard single to left put runners at first and second and leadoff hitter Patrick Blake walked to load the bases. A Josh Hall dribbler in front of the plate ended the Cougars' chances as catcher Tanner Tweedt made the easy throw to first for the win. Seventh inning drama aside, the Spartans' game was saved in the sixth when center fielder Wes Clawson hauled in a deep drive off the bat of Jordan Tay- lor with 2 on and 1 out. The Spartans runs came in the first after leadoff hitter Eric Spencer walked and Austin Youngblood reached on a sin- gle. Pritchard moved the run- ners to second and third with a sacrifice and a Kolby Button single sent them home. Spencer would add 2 more hits and Youngblood would get another. Ryan Gamboa reached to give the Spartans 5 hits in the win. The Cougars had 7 hits in the shutout loss. Neither team re- corded an error. By Doug Ferguson The Associated Press AUGUSTA,GA. A big deficit. A col- lapse that was painful to watch. An Englishman in a green jacket who might not get his due. Nick Faldo has seen this all be- fore. On Sunday, it was Danny Wil- lett who hit all the right shots to win the Masters. "We all go out there and try and play good golf, and at the end of the day, someone has got to win the golf tournament," Wil- lett said in Butler Cabin as Jor- dan Spieth, his face still awash in shock, looked on. "And, fortu- nately enough, today was my day." Just like 20 years ago, when Faldo won Greg Norman's ex- pense, this Masters might be re- membered more for the way it was lost than how it was won. Even as Willett stood on the 18th green in his green jacket, he couldn't help but say to Jordan Spieth, "I feel very fortunate to be standing here, and you not put- ting the jacket on yourself again." This was Spieth's to lose, and he did just that in matter of three holes. Staked to a five-shot lead going to the back nine, Spieth found a bunker at No. 10 and made bo- gey. He hit into the trees right of the 11th fairway that led to an- other bogey. And then one swing changed everything. Spieth chose to fade a 9-iron toward the right pin on the par-3 12th and came up short and into the water. Going to the drop zone for an awkward dis- tance, he hit his wedge so fat that it found the water again. The quadruple-bogey 7 put him three shots behind. Those are the shots for which this Masters will be remembered, at least in the immediate future. The images are not Willett clench- ing his fist when he made three birdies on the last six holes, but Spieth hanging his head as a five- shot lead turned into a three-shot deficit. "It was a really tough 30 min- utes for me," Spieth said, "that hopefully I never experience again." Two weeks ago, Faldo was rem- iniscing about his six-shot come- back to beat Norman in 1996. Ev- GOLF Willett's jacket: A Masters won as much as it was lost YREKA The Corning Cardinals baseball team managed a late rally Friday, but it fell short and they took a 7-3 loss to the Yreka Miners on the road. Yreka plated a runner in the second through fifth innings and 3 more in the sixth to build a 7-0 lead going into the final frame. The Cardinals scored 3 in the sev- enth, but that would be all. Drew Fissori went 2-3 with a double and an RBI; Austin Fox had an RBI, and Brady Meeds, Devin Wunsch, Isaiah Jones and Reeve Evans each notched a hit. Jones and Evans would score for the Cardinals. Jones gave up 3 earned runs on 7 hits and a walk over 4.2 in- nings, striking out 2. Fox finished the game, giving up 2 earned runs on 3 hits and a walk and struck out 2. The Cardinals (3-6 overall, 1-1 league) are scheduled to take on the Lassen Grizzlies (9-6 overall, 2-0 league) at 4 p.m. today in Su- sanville. WARRIORS 1, CHESTER 12 The Mercy Warriors put up a run in the first Friday to avoid the shut- out, but the rest of the game be- longed to the Chester Volcanoes, who won 12-1. Richie Borges was named player of the game for the War- riors, going 1-3 and pitching 4.1 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 3 hits with 10 walks and strik- ing out 13. Travis Gorden homered in the first for Mercy's only run, going 1-3. He took over for Borges and closed out the game, giving up a home run and striking out 2. The Warriors (2-7 overall, 1-1 league) are scheduled to host the Princeton Eagles (0-0 overall) at 4 p.m. today at Diamond Park in Red Bluff. BULLDOGS 18, LIBERTY CHRISTIAN 3 The Los Molinos Bulldogs trounced the Liberty Christian Patriots at home Friday 18-3. As of 1 p.m. Monday no indi- vidual stats had been posted for the game. The Bulldogs (6-2 overall, 2-0 league) were scheduled to face the Chester Volcanoes (5-6 over- all, 1-0 league) at 4 p.m. Monday in Chester.
