"I sense that we ran into four really good pitchers and that (White Sox) bull- pen is really good, too," said catcher Stephen Vogt. "I think this team is going to hit, we hit all spring. We're going to catch our stride here. I don't think we're tight. I just think we ran into some good pitch- ing and once we get roll- ing, this team is going to hit and we feel good about that." Manager Bob Melvin wasn't about to make too much of a sluggish first four games. "Put it behind you and expect to do better," he said. "There were three re- ally close games and one that got out of hand to- day. We have some guys with some track records, we have some guys who can hit. We swung that bat well coming into the sea- son, in this series we just did not. But I expect us to come around, definitely." After facing three left- handed starters in a row, Melvin was excited to throw out his righty lineup against Latos, who was aw- ful during the spring, post- ing a 10.38 ERA. But on this day, the A's made him look like Greg Maddux in his White Sox debut. Latos did not allow a hit through the first 4 1/3 innings until Chris Coghlan finally sin- gled to left. He left after six innings having given up just the one hit while walking one and striking out two. Graveman was nearly as good through his first five, allowing just two singles and striking out four, in- cluding ex-teammate Brett Lawrie twice. In the sixth, however, the 25-year-old right-hander walked lead- off man Melky Cabrera and Jose Abreu followed by slamming a 1-1 pitch over the right-field fence for his first homer of the year and a 2-0 Chicago lead. "I threw the ball well and I was pleased with that, and I had all four pitches working again," said Graveman. "But later in the game against Abreu, a pitch leaked back over the plate after a four-pitch walk. That can't happen. I have to continue to stay focused late in the game there and continue to get outs." Graveman was being a bit hard on himself for someone pitching with zero margin for error. A's FROM PAGE 1 small ball. Brandon Craw- ford drew a leadoff walk in the fifth, Kelby Tomlinson jetted down the line with a pinch bunt single, Pagan advanced both runners on a ground out, and with the infield playing back, De- nard Span's ground out to second base scored Craw- ford. The seal was broken. The apocalypse followed. Joe Panik tripled home Tomlinson and then scored on Buster Posey's double. Although Wood had just escaped a stressful inning still holding a 4-3 lead, Roberts let his pitcher bat in the fifth. The decision backfired, as Matt Duffy and Crawford singled to start the four-run sixth. Ehire Adrianza advanced them with a pinch bunt — yes, Bruce Bochy burned up half his bench before the seventh inning to put down two bunts — and Pa- gan followed by dumping the first pitch into right field, flashing a salute to the dugout as he put the Giants ahead. Panik and Posey capped the rally with RBI singles. When the Dodgers made it a one-run game on Joc Ped- erson's home run off Sergio Romo in the eighth, the Gi- ants swiftly responded in the bottom of the inning. Pence's teammates almost had to shove him onto the topstepfor acurtaincall af- ter his slam off Pedro Baez. Pence said it at the tail end of spring training: What he liked most about the Giants offense was its potential not only to sus- tain a rally but to obliter- ate an opponent. "If the pitcher isn't giv- ing it his all, the game could be changed quick," Pence said. The game was tak- ing a much different tack through the middle of the fifth. Peavy took the mound with Matt Nathanson's rootsy national anthem still in his ears and he felt a surge of applause after needing just four pitches to retire the Dodgers in the first inning. But hittable Jake was not a good thing. Peavy threw 50 strikes in his five innings, just two were clean swings and misses — and one of those came from the opposing pitcher. Peavy allowed 10 hits including three well struck doubles, yet was resourceful enough to hold the Dodgers to four runs. Giants FROM PAGE 1 back. I know I can catch up." Right when Day was fall- ing apart, McIlroy holed an 18-foot eagle putt on the 13th and looked to be on his wayinhisbidtowinagreen jacket and complete the ca- reer Grand Slam. He was within two shots of the lead until he three-putted the 16th for bogey and missed the 18th green to the right, was plugged in a bunker and dropped another shot for a 70. Even so, it was his best start since 2011. "If somebody had given me a 70 on the first day, I would have taken it," Mc- Ilroy said. "I'm a little dis- appointed in the way I fin- ished." Bubba Watson, a two- time champion, had a 41 on the back nine and shot 75. He wasn't even low Watson — 66-year-old Tom Watson, in his last Masters, shot 74. Adam Scott, coming off two victories in Florida last month, opened with a 76. Rickie Fowler had his worst score ever at Augusta National by posting an 80, with 44 of those shots com- ing on the back nine. Spieth simply picked up where he left off a year ago. Never mind that he dis- covered a hairline crack in his driver during Wednes- day practice and had to find a backup for the open- ing round. Or that he was hearing questions about what was wrong with his game from not having seri- ously contended in the last two months. Spieth was at Augusta National, a course that feels like home for the 22-year-old Texan. "That was a flawless round of golf," said Paul Casey, who played with Spieth and posted a solid 69. "I played a wonderful round of golf, but it was great to have a front row seat to watch that." For all the birdies — none longer than 12 feet — the pars make Spieth look so tough to beat. He settled himself early with a beautiful pitch across the first green to 2 feet. He pumped his fist with a tough pitch over the bunker and to the up- per tier on No. 4. He gam- bled with a 4-iron through a tiny gap in the trees on the 11th and made it pay off with another par. On 16, he kept his card clean by ram- ming in a 15-foot par putt. By the end of the day, no one could do better. Casey was among five Europeans at 69, joining Justin Rose, Ian Poulter, Sergio Garcia and Soren Kjeldsen. Two more were at 70 — McIlroy and Danny Willett, along with Amer- icans Billy Horschel and Scott Piercy. Nine players couldn't break 80, a group that in- cluded Ernie Els, who took six putts from 2 feet on the opening hole for a 9. He played the rest of the day at 1 over. The day ended with a name at the top that was familiar. "I would have signed for 2 under today and not even played the rough, knowing the conditions that were coming up," Spieth said. "Just scored extremely well, which is something I've been struggling with this season. If I can kind of straighten out things with the iron play, hope- fully we'll be in business." Masters FROM PAGE 1 back-to-back two-run sin- gles, putting the visitors up 5-0 on Cleary and the Bob- cats out of the gate. Cleary wouldn't strug- gle again till the sixth when he relinquished three straight hits, capped by an RBI double down the left- field line from senior Lane Pritchard, extending the lead to 9-1. Pritchard would come home two batters later on the first of two hits from Bryce Sinclair to make it 10-1 through 5 . Dylan Moran put Para- dise — home against En- terprise Tuesday — on the board again in the bot- tom of the sixth with a solo home run to left — one of a game-high two hits for the Paradise se- nior catcher. "I wasn't rattled by it," Clawson said. "I tried to stay calm, keep doing my thing." Clawson would retire the ensuing hitter as Ryan Farrell bounced out to first, setting the stage for relief pitcher Evan Tanner to shut the door on Para- dise with three consecutive strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh. It's now on to Foothill at home Friday night when Red Bluff will be led by Sin- clair on the mound against the mighty Cougars.
