Thank you! - www.oregonsigep.com l @UofOSigep f Sigma Phi Epsilon - Oregon Beta Chapter i @sigepuo Lost and Found I n the fall of 2011, while working on a project at the Fraternity House, one of the members, Hayden Meriwether '14, mentioned to me that he had found a ring by the basketball court. He wanted me to look at it and I agreed to do so later in the day. As fate would have it, the project turned out to be more difficult and time consuming than originally planned. By the end of the day, fatigue had overcome thought process. Consequently, I forgot to check out the ring. Fast forward to the fall of 2015. Hayden was involved in a community service project in Portland, providing dental care products to the homeless. In addition to handing out these products, he was busy soliciting funds with which to purchase them. I made a donation and in the thank-you conversation he mentioned that he still had the ring and would like to try and find the owner. I told him to send me a picture and description of the ring and I would include the information in the Oregon Beta Heartbeat newsletter. When he sent me the information and picture, I was surprised to see that it was a class ring from my graduating class. We were able to barely discern the initials inside the ring, but they appeared to be J.E. Looking closer, I wondered if it in fact was not Jeff E. I contacted Jeff Edwards '68 and, lo and behold, he had lost his class ring in the fall of 1966. He had placed it on the lawn while playing basketball as he had concluded its weight was interfering with his jump shot. He forgot to pick it up after the game, and when he returned, it was nowhere to be found. The ring and Jeff were reunited last winter. Of course, 50 years later, it appears the ring has shrunk from being in the lawn for so long. "To say that I was surprised and thrilled would be an understatement," said Jeff. "The ring had been lost for 50 years! I cannot thank Hayden enough for making the effort to track me down and return it. That is brotherhood." And if you believe in karma, Hayden recently learned that he had been admitted to the University of Oregon dental program at Oregon Health & Science University beginning this fall.
