Ontheair to ask more after his left- handed ace had labored while throwing just 55 strikes in 101 pitches. It was five innings of ex- ertion to get outs, and the crisis management began even earlier than the first pitch. The Giants' flight was supposed to arrive in Milwaukee at 6 p.m. Sun- day but the charter com- pany notified the team that its plane had a mechani- cal problem. A worker ac- cidentally cut a wire while installing part of an up- graded entertainment sys- tem, and a replacement would have to be flown in from Miami. So the Giants literally scrambled their jets. They ordered a private, 12-seater to take the starting lineup, plus relievers Javier Lopez and Santiago Casilla, so they could arrive at a de- cent hour. Bumgarner, run- ning a fever, crashed on a couch in the back of the small jet. But weather de- lays ruined those plans, too. The private plane landed at 11:30 p.m., barely a half- hour ahead of the rest of the team. Prior to the game, Bo- chy acknowledged that Bumgarner might be "a lit- tle washed out." That was apparent in the first inning, when he issued three walks — including a free pass to Chris Carter with the bases loaded, just the sec- ond time he's done that in his career. It took a mound visit from pitching coach Dave Righetti and a double- play grounder from Aaron Hill to elicit a roar from Bumgarner as he walked off the field. The Giants have the kind of team that can out- hit their frailties and their mistakes. Duffy's first at- bat of the season came in the second inning, and in an RBI spot after Hunter Pence reached on an error and Brandon Belt bounced a double off the warning track. Duffy whistled a two- run single. They went ahead when Bochy's new lineup design, with the pitcher batting eighth, delivered flawless results. Because Bumgar- ner made the final out of the second inning, Pagan led off the third and moved into scoring position fol- lowing a walk and a stolen base. He scored easily when Span singled for his first hit as a Giant. Giants FROM PAGE 1 granted. Kaepernick flew to the Bay Area on Sun- day night from Colorado, where he has been reha- bilitating from surgeries on his left shoulder, left knee and right thumb. I Kaepernick, 28, is en- tering his sixth season. He made 47 consecutive reg- ular-season starts before then-coach Jim Tomsula benched him after 8 games in favor of Blaine Gabbert, who went 3-5 as the 49ers closed a 5-11 season. The 49ers are hoping that Kae- pernick will embrace Kel- ly's up-tempo offense and compete with Gabbert for the starting job. Gabbert is entering the final year of his contract, at a $1.75 million base sal- ary. The 49ers other quar- terbacks under contract are Dylan Thompson, un- drafted a year ago out of South Carolina, and Thad Lewis, a journeyman who served as the Eagles' No. 3 quarterback last year un- der Kelly. The 49ers could add another quarterback in the draft, where they hold the seventh-overall pick April 28. Although Kelly is al- lowed to talk football for the first time with his play- ers and issue them iPad playbooks, he and other coaches aren't allowed to interact or watch them on the field these next two weeks. The first phase of the offseason program is limited to strength and conditioning, or rehabili- tation, as will be the case with Kaepernick, who's re- covering from surgeries to his right thumb, left shoul- der and left knee. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 BEN MARGOT — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FILE PHOTO 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick stands on the field during a game against the Atlanta Falcons in Santa Clara. By Doug Feinberg The Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS Breanna Stewart came to UConn with the lofty goal of win- ning four national cham- pionships and the Huskies are now just one victory away from history. They will play former Big East foe Syracuse on Tues- day night with a chance to become the first women's team to win four straight Division I titles. Only UCLA, with seven in a row from 1967-73, has done it on the men's side, and a UConn victory would give coach Geno Auriemma 11 national championships — one more than Bruins coach John Wooden for the most ever in the history of college basketball. While Stewart didn't guarantee four titles when she was a freshman, she did promise a victory against Syracuse. "I'm not going to go and say that we're going to lose," Stewart said after the Hus- kies beat Oregon State in the Final Four. "To end my college career, to end it with the other seniors, there is no other way that I want that to happen." Syracuse coach Quentin Hillsman wasn't planning on using the comments as extra motivation for his team. "I don't think she knew who she was playing yet," he said, laughing. "So what is she supposed to say? I told our fans and our crowd that we're going to win, too." Auriemma shrugged it off. "Having said it and now being on the verge of be- ing able to do it, those are amazing things that it's like a storybook," Auriemma said. "You have to admire her. She's got a lot of guts, Stewie does. And you know what we talk about on our team a lot is courage. And it takes a lot of courage some- times to say certain things and to be able to do certain things." Stewart and her fel- low UConn seniors have won 74 straight games and have never lost in the NCAA Tournament, going 23-0. To win the title, Stewart and the Huskies will have to beat her hometown team. "It definitely feels like it's coming full circle," Stew- art said. "From my fresh- man year, when we played in the Big East, we played against Syracuse. Follow- ing that, there was no Big East, so we obviously didn't get to play them and now having an opportunity to finish it off against them." NCAA WOMEN'S TOURNAMENT UConn nears unprecedented 4th consecutive championship AJ MAST — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Uconn's Breanna Stewart is greeted by head coach Geno Auriemma as she is taken out of the game during the second half against Oregon State Sunday in Indianapolis. kins was leaping over press row, hugging his fam- ily and shouting: "They said we couldn't, they said we couldn't, they said we couldn't." Oh yes, they could. It's Villanova's first ti- tle since 1985, when Rollie Massimino coaxed a mira- cle out of his eighth-seeded underdogs for a victory over star-studded George- town. Hard to top this one, though. Jenkins, who was ad- opted by the family of North Carolina guard Nate Britt, now has a spot with Keith Smart, Lo- renzo Charles and anyone else who ever made a late game-winner to win the whole thing. Paige finished with 21 for the top-seeded Heels (33-7), who came one ag- onizing shot short of giv- ing coach Roy Williams his third national title.
