TOMLYNN—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS Giants' Denard Span is greeted by teammates Gregor Blanco and Brandon Crawford a er hitting a three-run home run during the eighth inning Monday in Milwaukee. ByAndrewBaggarly BayAreaNewsGroup MILWAUKEE Madison Bumgarner had the flu. He touched down just ahead of midnight Sunday on a pri- vate plane, which the Giants had hast- ily arranged. He was in no condition to commandeer the mound, grip a baseball and set a tone for a five- month season. He didn't have to. What's one note when you're surrounded by a jam band? The Giants' spring optimism over their offensive potential wasn't un- founded in a 12-3 pounding of the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday af- ternoon. Denard Span, Joe Panik and Buster Posey became the first Giants to hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in a decade. Matt Duffy also went deep and drove in four runs. Angel Pagan, batting ninth in the order, of- fered proof-of-concept to the "second leadoff man" theory while scoring the tiebreaking run in the third. And the roof that Bud Selig built kept out the 35-degree slush while holding in all those loud thwacks as the Giants scored their most runs on opening day in 33 years. Bumgarner (1-0) even emerged with a victory on an afternoon when he walked in a run for just the sec- ond time in his career, and allowed two-strike home runs to tepid power threats Scooter Gennett and Jona- than Villar. For Gennett, it was the first time he'd ever homered off a lefty pitcher. But the Miller Park crowd groaned as Bumgarner rallied to strike out the side in the fifth inning. By Eddie Pells The Associated Press HOUSTON One good shot de- served another. Kris Jenkins of Villanova wasn't about to be outdone. Jenkins overcame the shock of watching North Carolina's Marcus Paige hit a double-clutch 3 to tie it by spotting up behind the right side of the arc and draining a 3 of his own at the buzzer to lift Villanova to a 77-74 victory and the national cham- pionship Monday night. What a shot — and what a game. The second-seeded Wildcats (35-5), had a six-point lead with 1:52 left, but watched it slowly trickle away. Then, it was gone, when Paige jumped — and when Ryan Arcidacono started run- ning at him — double clutched and pumped one from beyond the arc to tie the game at 74 with 4.7 seconds left. After a timeout, Arcidacono worked the ball upcourt and got it to Jenkins, who swished it from about two steps behind the 3-point line. "Kris told him he was going to be open, Arch made the per- fect pass," Villanova coach Jay Wright explained. "Kris lives for that moment." Borges gave up 6 runs, one earned, on 4 hits over 7 innings, walked 7 and notched 16 strike- outs. BASEBALL Warriors win 1, drop 2 at Chester tourney By Cam Inman Bay Area News Group SANTA CLARA The 49ers began their off-season program Monday, and Colin Kaepernick was in at- tendance. It's the first step toward possibly re-starting the quarter- back's career under new coach Chip Kelly. Whether Kaepernick maintains that course or pursues a trade at a cheaper salary elsewhere is up to him, a team official said on the condition of anonymity. A source told this news orga- nization three weeks ago that Kaepernick wouldn't boycott the 49ers program, and that held true despite trade talks having heated up last week when Kae- pernick met twice with Denver Broncos general manager John Elway. That potential trade is at a standstill, however, because of fi- nancial issues, and no other team has emerged as a serious suitor, the team official said. Kaepernick's $11.9 million base salary became guaranteed when he remained on the 49ers roster through Thursday. He stands to earn a $400,000 bonus for par- ticipating in 90 percent of the off- season program.
