US Baptists charged with kidnapping in Haiti PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Ten mem- bers of a U.S. missionary group who said they were trying to rescue 33 child victims of Haiti's devas- tating earthquake were charged with child kid- napping and criminal association on Thursday, their lawyer said. Edwin Coq said after a court hearing that a judge found sufficient evidence to charge the Americans, who were arrested Friday at Haiti's border with the Dominican Republic. Coq attended Thursday's hear- ing and represents the entire group in Haiti. Group leader Laura Silsby has said they were trying to take orphans and abandoned children to an orphanage in the neigh- boring Dominican Repub- lic. She acknowledged they had not sought per- mission from Haitian offi- cials, but said they just meant to help victims of the quake. The children taken from the group, ranging in age from 2 to 12, were being cared for at the Austrian-run SOS Chil- dren's Village in Port-au- Prince on Wednesday. The U.S. citizens, most of them members of an Idaho-based church group, were whisked away from the closed court hearing to jail in Port-au-Prince, the capi- tal. Silsby waved and smiled faintly to reporters but declined to answer questions. Toyota looks at 2010 Prius brakes issue WASHINGTON (AP) — Toyota said Thursday it is evaluating brake problems with the 2010 Prius gas-electric hybrid, but no decision has been made about a recall. Earlier Thursday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it opened an investi- gation into the car, the best selling hybrid in the U.S., citing 124 reports it received from consumers about its brakes, includ- ing four crashes. The gov- ernment is looking into complaints that antilock brakes can fail momentar- ily on some 2010 models in slippery conditions or on rough roads. The company says it made a change in the 2010 braking system last month to correct cars in production. The company has not made a decision about cars on the road. Asked if Toyota would recall the 2010 Priuses, spokesman Brian Lyons said: ''It's too soon to call at this point. We will of course fully cooperate with NHTSA in that investigation.'' Lyons also said Toyota is checking other hybrid models in its lineup to see if they have the same braking system as the 2010 model, but so far he is not aware of any other models being involved. Suspect in Christmas bomb plot gives intel WASHINGTON (AP) — The Nigerian suspect in a failed Christmas Day airliner bombing turned against the cleric who claims to be his teacher and has helped the U.S. hunt for the radical preacher, a law enforce- ment official said Thurs- day. Umar Farouk Abdul- mutallab, the 23-year-old Nigerian who faces ter- rorism charges in the Christmas bombing, has been cooperating with the FBI for days, providing information about his contacts in Yemen and the al-Qaida affiliate that operates there. His cooperation talk- ing about U.S.-born Yemeni radical Anwar al- Awlaki is significant because it could provide fresh clues for authorities trying to capture or kill him in the remote moun- tains of Yemen. Al-Awla- ki has emerged has a prominent al-Qaida recruiter and has been tied to the 9/11 hijackers, Abdulmutallab and the suspect in November's deadly shooting rampage at Fort Hood. The law enforcement official would not say what information Abdul- mutallab provided, but al- Awlaki himself said in a recent interview that he and Abdulmutallab had kept in contact. A senior U.S. intelligence official said al-Awlaki represent- ed the biggest name on the list of people Abdul- mutallab might have information against. Both spoke on condition anonymity to discuss the sensitive ongoing investi- gation. Abdulmutallab's coop- eration with U.S. authori- ties is at the center of a political dispute in Wash- ington. Democrats say it proves the Obama admin- istration was correct to handle the case as a crim- inal matter. Republicans accuse the administration of leaking details for political purposes. Republican Scott Brown takes oath WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Scott Brown took over the seat of the late Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy on Thursday, vowing to be an indepen- dent voice in a bitterly divided Senate. Brown was sworn-in by Vice President Joe Biden Thursday at a Capitol Hill ceremony a week earlier than he originally planned, and just in time to plunge into a partisan fight over President Barack Obama's choice of a union attorney for a top labor job. Brown's arrival in the Senate ends the Democrats' supermajority and gives the GOP 41 votes they can use to block President Barack Obama's agenda. Depending on how Democrats set the Senate's calendar, Brown's first vote could be against the confir- mation of Craig Becker, a lawyer for the Service Employees International Union, to a seat on the National Labor Relations Board, the federal panel that referees private sector labor- management disputes. The Senate Health, Edu- cation, Labor and Pensions Committee approved Beck- er's nomination on a party- line 13-10 vote Thursday, sending it to the full Senate. FDA worries dissolvable tobacco aims at children RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration is saying in letters to two tobacco companies that flavored, dissolvable tobacco products — that the agency compares with candy and says contain a lot of nicotine — could be particularly appealing to kids and young adults. The FDA's Center for Tobacco Products wrote to R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., maker of Camel cig- arettes, and the smaller Star Scientific Inc. on Monday voicing concern over smokeless products that are consumed like breath mints but made from finely milled tobac- co. ''CTP is concerned that children and adoles- cents may find dissolv- able tobacco products particularly appealing, given the brightly colored packaging, candy-like appearance and easily concealable size of many of these products,'' Dr. Lawrence Deyton, direc- tor of the Center for Tobacco Products, told the companies. Deyton said regulators are worried the products' nicotine content and rapid dissolution could cause nicotine dependence and addiction and be especial- ly dangerous to children and young adults. He asked the two best known makers of dissolv- able tobacco products to provide their research and marketing information on how people under age 26 perceive and use the prod- ucts. Brittany Murphy's death ruled accidental LOS ANGELES (AP) — Brittany Murphy died from pneumonia, but ane- mia and prescription drugs also played a role, coroner's officials said Thursday. The primary cause of death was community- acquired pneumonia, with contributing fac- tors of iron deficiency anemia and ''multiple drug intoxication,'' according to the Los Angeles County coro- ner's office. The death was ruled accidental. Coroner's spokesman Craig Harvey declined to specify what types of drugs were involved but said they were all pre- scription medications. Details about the drugs the ''Clueless'' and ''8 Mile'' star had in her sys- tem will be released in several weeks when a complete report is done. Murphy died Dec. 20 at age 32 after collaps- ing at her Hollywood Hills home. Her mother and husband have said the actress didn't abuse prescription medications or have an eating disor- der. Giant pandas leave for breeding in China WASHINGTON (AP) — They were treated like pop idols — except for being stuck in travel crates. Adoring crowds and television viewers watched Thursday as American-born giant pandas Mei Lan and Tai Shan were loaded onto a special cargo jet for a flight to their new homes in China for breeding. Normally placid, 3- year-old Mei Lan from Zoo Atlanta whirled and paced in her crate as flashbulbs popped. Tai Shan, a 4 1/2-year-old born in Washington, hid at first but was drawn into view as his long- time keepers at the National Zoo knelt silently at his crate to say goodbye, hand- feeding him slices of apples and pears. One zookeeper wiped away tears. Federal police officers escorted Tai Shan to the airport, and FedEx workers transporting the pair buzzed around in ''Panda Team'' jackets to go with the huge panda emblem painted on their jet. News net- works provided live coverage of the plane waiting on the tarmac and taking off. As the Boeing 777's giant engines rumbled to life, tears started to flow for panda lover Mara Strock of Burke, Va., who looked on with other invited guests. 6A – Daily News – Friday, February 5, 2010 "Shower the people you love with love … Show them the way you feel …" N EWS D AILY RED BLUFF TEHAMA COUNTY B.
