A : While it's been one of the network's most pres- tigious shows, it hasn't been one of its highest-rated ... verified by the week ending Feb. 21, when CBS had the top 11 programs in "live plus same (delayed-viewing) day" ratings, none of which was that week's episode of "The Good Wife." Other factors have been at play to prompt the net- work to end the series with its current set of episodes, particularly the fact that the deals for several of its key players are coming to an end: star Julianna Margu- lies, and creators and exec- utive producers Robert and Michelle King. Shortly before the can- cellation confirmation, Mar- gulies — who has won two Emmys for the drama — told the crowd at an industry event that she would be "unemployed come April," making it sound unlikely she would have re-upped had the show continued. And while other series have continued without retaining their driving forces behind the scenes, that's rarely the preference. (The Kings are moving on to make a summer show for CBS, the comedy-thriller "Braindead.") Bottom line? In the eyes of many observers, the timing seems right.
