ByLolitaC.Baldor TheAssociatedPress WASHINGTON The Amer- ican combat role in Iraq appeared to expand on Thursday as U.S. Marines operating from a small outpost provided target- ing assistance and artil- lery fire to support Iraqi troops inching forward to retake Mosul from Islamic State militants. A senior U.S. official said the Marines fired il- lumination rounds to help the Iraqi forces locate IS fighters, and also fired artillery rounds in sup- port of the operation, as Iraqi troops took control of several villages on the outskirts of Makhmour, southeast of Mosul. The official was not authorized to discuss the operation publicly and requested an- onymity. Earlier this week, U.S. military officials con- firmed the creation of the Marine outpost, dubbed Fire Base Bell. It's the first such base estab- lished by the U.S. since it returned forces to Iraq in 2014. But they insisted that the nearly 200 Ma- rines were only there to provide security for Iraqi forces and U.S. advisers at the nearby Iraqi base in Makhmour. American fighter jets also participated in Thurs- day's operation, launching multiple airstrikes on at least two locations, hitting enemy rocket and mortar positions, the official said. The U.S.-led coalition has routinely been launch- ing airstrikes across Iraq against the Islamic State group. A second U.S. official on Thursday said that the Marines provided the ar- tillery fire in response to a request from the Iraqi government and that U.S. leaders don't believe this to be an expanded com- bat mission. The offi- cial, who was not autho- rized to discuss the op- eration publicly so spoke on condition of anonym- ity, said it was considered expanded support for the Iraqis. IRAQ WAR Official:Marinesexpandcombatrole By John-Thor Dahlburg The Associated Press BRUSSELS Belgium's in- terior minister and justice minister tried to resign Thursday ahead of an emer- gency meeting of European security chiefs held amid growing questions about why authorities couldn't prevent deadly Islamic ex- tremist attacks on Brussels despite increasing signs of a threat. Prosecutors announced a direct connection be- tween the Brussels bomb- ings that killed 31 people and injured 270 others and last year's attacks on Paris, which appear to have been carried out by the same Is- lamic State network. The attacks have laid bare Eu- ropean security failings and prompted calls for better in- telligence cooperation. Interior Minister Jan Jambon said after a gov- ernment meeting Thursday that "If you put all things in a row, you can ask your- self major questions" about the government's handling of the threat from Islamic extremists. One notable question was raised by Turkey's an- nouncement that it had warned Belgium last year that one of the Brussels at- tackers had been flagged as a "foreign terrorist fighter." But the prime minister asked Jambon and Justice Minister Koen Geens to stay on, given the current challenge the government is facing. The country lowered its threat level late Thurs- day, but said the potential for attacks remains likely. "The danger has not gone away," said Paul Van Tigchelt, the head of the ter- ror assessment authority. The meeting came as Bel- gian and French media re- ported a second attacker is suspected of taking part in the bombing this week of a Brussels subway train and may be at large. Belgian prosecutors have said at least four peo- ple were involved in Tues- day's attacks on the Brus- sels airport and a subway train, including broth- ers Ibrahim and Khalid El Bakraoui, identified as sui- cide bombers. European se- curity officials identified an- other suicide bomber as Na- jim Laachraoui, a suspected bombmaker for the Paris at- tacks. Khalid El Bakraoui blew himself up on the train, while Ibrahim El Bakraoui and Laachraoui died in the airport. Prosecutors have said another suspected partici- pant in the airport attack is at large, a man in a hat seen in surveillance images who has not been publicly identified. Belgian state broad- caster RTBF and France's Le Monde and BFM televi- sion reported Thursday that a fifth attacker may also be at large: a man filmed by surveillance cameras in the Brussels metro on Tuesday carrying a large bag along- side Khalid El Bakraoui. It is not clear whether that man was killed in the at- tack. The federal prosecutors' office issued a statement Thursday saying that Kha- lid El Bakraoui had rented a house used as a hideout for the Paris attackers, and that he had been hunted by po- lice since December. Turkey's president said Wednesday that one of the Brussels suicide bombers, Ibrahim El Bakraoui, was caught in June 2015 near Turkey's border with Syria and deported to the Neth- erlands, with Ankara warn- ing Dutch and Belgian offi- cials that he was a "foreign terrorist fighter." Turkish officials said he was later re- leased from Dutch custody due to lack of evidence of involvement in extremism.
