The majority of them work hard, do good deeds, donate countless hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars into making our communities better places to live, work and play. Kiwanis International is one such organization, and, I'll bet there are at least 10 other chartered Kiwanis Clubs within our county and dozens throughout the Cape Fear Region. So, needless to say, we were surprised and disappointed when the prestigious Our State magazine featured North Carolina "service organizations" and failed to mention Kiwanis International. Again, we were disappointed and perplexed. However, even though we really did not get an explanation beyond "Oops," I do have a theory on how that happened. When listing the service Best Overall Performer and Scholarship Winner, Pianist Madison Blake. organization's merits and contributions, the Kiwanis International tipped the scale and would have unintentionally minimalised the missions, contributions and good works of other fine organizations. Kiwanis' emphasis and priority is on serving and developing children. Unlike other organizations, Kiwanis has programs that start the process of influencing a child's education, character and social responsibility starting in high school and following through into their college years. Do these organizations sound familiar? High School-Key Clubs. Kiwanettes. All of these organizations are designed to build character and social and civic responsibility. All good things. I have been a proud member of the Fayetteville Kiwanis Club for nearly 20 years. Our club has more than 230 members and is one of the largest (if not the largest) in the Carolinas. We meet every Friday afternoon for lunch at the Honeycutt Recreational Center — an experience traditionally not intended for the faint of heart or those who are thin of skin. From years of association, I can affectionately and truthfully say this club means business. Nowhere was that more evident than this weekend at the Cape Fear Regional Theatre where we hosted the 61st Annual Kiwanis Talent Night, a 61-year-old fundraiser. Wow! Now that has to be a record. But, good things have a tendency to last and this event stands out as the most recent example of Kiwanis impact and influence on the community: Having fun, doing good deeds, raising thousands of dollars, honoring, recognizing and motivating young children and giving back to the community. Needless to say, it is a much needed and rewarding process.
