Hollywoodisrising from the ashes of its long duration rush to es- cape por- traying the authentically good, true and beau- tiful with a floodtide of God-honor- ing films. 2015 was good. When the Game Stands Tall, God's Not Dead, Heaven is Real, Woodlawn, and Fury were well written, acted and constructed films telling truth — the whole truth — about what happens when the authentic Lord of this world impacts a commu- nity. But this year a ver- itable tsunami of grace makes landfall; we have barely entered Spring. At this writing 2016 has birthed Caged No More, Risen, 90 Minutes in Heaven, and Spotlight. March sees release of Mir- acles from Heaven, Young Messiah, and God's Not Dead 2. Later this Spring Do You Believe? and Char- iots of Fire 2 will reach lo- cal screens. I focus now on two current events — Spotlight and Risen. Spotlight features an amazing cast led by Mi- chael Keaton, Mark Ruf- falo, and Rachel Mc- Adams. (Liev Schreiber gives a wonderfully un- derstated performance as well.) It chronicles The Boston Globe expo- sure of the Roman Cath- olic Church hiding sexual abusers amongst its clergy. Spotlight won Academy Awards for best picture and original screenplay, and other awards for ac- curacy of its storytelling. To be fair, the National Catholic Reporter cov- ered these scandals more than a decade before sec- ular outlets noticed, and the Vatican offered high praise for the film. To be blunt — on the other hand — the real scandal went deeper than hundreds of priests molesting thou- sands of children. It was the institutionalized cover- ups by officials at many levels that brought such disrepute on the Catho- lic Church and the Body of Christ at large. The cul- ture of institutions has not changed much since; any Church is just another in- stitution when covering its backside becomes its act of worship. Yet the movie shows the road to redemption. It is a study in progressive re- pentance even as the Spot- light team penetrates mul- tiple layers of cover-up, temptation and manipu- lation, not to mention the team's own denial of the scope of the moral mon- strosity. At first they think there is no story; later they think it not their story; eventually they confront the reality that it has con- fronted them for decades. At that point their editor tells them what counts is not their past failures but their present courage and competence. He issues a right-on implied declara- tion that repentance is not so much sorrow for sin as re-focus on God Himself and re-dedication to His imitation. Just as important is that most or all the heavy lifting of exposure — the only road to healing — is done by Catholics them- selves. These (mostly lapsed) Catholics love but do not worship their Church; that is crucial, whatever the denomina- tion or persuasion. Risen is nothing like Spotlight, albeit dealing with the same core issues. A Roman centurion — Cla- vius — played by Joseph Fi- ennes is tasked by Pontius Pilate with recovering the body of Yeshua — Jesus — and consequently exposing the supposed fraud of Ye- shua's resurrection. This is primarily for peace-keep- ing purposes; the Romans fear rioting and rebellion more than even their own loss of face if the man they crucified refuses to remain dead. Yet Clavius journeys into progressive repen- tance just as surely as the Spotlight team. He is the ruthless com- mander when he exe- cutes Barabbas less than a day after his release in the place of Yeshua. Only days later he stands before a faith-filled Mary Magde- lene unable to carry out his threat to torture her for in- formation in the face of the authentic love and peace she radiates. He continues to soften by stages as he encounters other disciples including Peter and — ulti- mately — the risen Yeshua Himself. When Yeshua asks Clavius what he fears he answers honestly that he fears being wrong, and en- tering eternity in his er- ror. Faced with the remedy to his error at last, he com- mits to pursuing the truth of the paradox that a man clearly dead is as clearly alive for the rest of his life. His courage in the face of paradoxical reality is the key to his lifelong repen- tance, and all he needs to enter the abundant life of Yeshua called Christ. I am convinced Clavius' dilemma is the great idol of Pharisees of all kinds, including we in the Body of Christ. We tend to fear being wrong more than we crave the gift of righ- teousness — rightness if you will. When we face the fear we find Yeshua wait- ing to break the idol and lead us into the rising from our own death that is His invitation to all — and is so well depicted in these two films from very differ- ent appearing platforms. GODTALK Hollywood rises from the dead Evangelist Franklin Gra- ham will bring Decision America Tour 2016 to Sac- ramento to the State Capital West Steps at noon Thurs- day, March 31 to pray for the USA and the impor- tant election coming up this year. Those who can get a car load together to go are en- couraged to do so. The de- tails are online at https:// decisionamericatour.com/ tour/california. For those unable to go to Sacramento, the First Bap- tist Church, 506 Colusa St. in Corning, will be open to pray at noon. Come and bring your friends and neighbors to meet locally to pray while the rally is going on in Sac- ramento. All concerned citizens are welcome. FIRST BAPTIST Publicinvitedtoprayconcerningelection St. Peter's Episcopal Church will offer worship services during Holy Week beginning with the Palm Sunday service on Sunday, March 20, and concluding withatraditionalEasterSer- vice on Sunday, March 27. The Rev. Diana Lueckert will preside and preach at the Palm Sunday worship service on March 20, at 9:30 a.m. This day com- memorates Jesus' trium- phant procession into Je- rusalem the week before his death and resurrection and is marked by a bless- ing of palms. Palms are waved rep- resenting the palms that were waved during Jesus' time, symbolizing good- ness and victory, and were placed in Jesus' path as he rode a donkey into Jeru- salem. Also referred to as Passion Sunday, this day marks the beginning of Holy Week. This year The Passion from the Gospel of Luke will be read. The Pas- sion refers to Jesus' suffer- ing leading up to his cru- cifixion. Following the tradi- tion begun with St. Fran- cis of Assisi and extended throughout the church in the medieval period, a Sta- tions of the Cross devotional service will be offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 23, led by Diaconate-in- Training, Fred Reynolds. The object of the Stations is to help Christians make a spiritual pilgrimage of prayer, through mediation upon the scenes of Christ's suffering and death. This liturgical service leads the worshipper in viewing a series of im- ages depicting Jesus on the day of his crucifixion arranged in order around the church sanctuary. Worshippers make their own journey and in the process confess their de- pendence upon God dur- ing this service of medi- tation, recalling the act of devotion to God. St. Peter's youth will present a tableau re- enacting the Last Sup- per on Thursday, March 24, as part of the 7 p.m. Maundy Thursday service. Visiting priest, The Rev. Charles Rines, will pre- side at this service which includes a stripping of the altar. Maundy Thursday or "Holy Thursday" is the day Christians commemo- rate the Last Supper when Jesus shared the Passover meal with his disciples on the night before he was crucified. In contrast to joyful Eas- ter celebrations when Chris- tians worship their res- urrected Savior, Maundy Thursday services are typ- ically more solemn oc- casions, marked by the shadow of Jesus' betrayal. The church altars are stripped at the end of the Holy Eucharist (also known as Holy Communion) on Maundy Thursday and any immovable crosses are shrouded. Holy Week will con- clude with a Flowering of the Cross and Holy Eu- charist service on Easter Sunday, March 27, at 9:30 a.m. celebrating the res- urrection of Jesus Christ. Christians believe, accord- ing to Scripture, that Je- sus came back to life, or was raised from the dead, three days after his death on the cross. Through his death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus paid the penalty for sin, thus purchasing for all who believe in him, eternal life in Christ Jesus. Easter is the oldest and greatest feast in the church year and the central day on the church calendar. All are welcome to attend Holy Week services.
