TEHAMA COUNTY EFFORTS LAUDED Nearly 200 young stu- dents, most of them girls, will build rockets and vol- canoes and fly a quadcopter during Imagineer Day on Saturday, April 2, hosted by the Society of Women En- gineers at California State University, Chico. The day of hands-on lab experiments in Langdon Engineering Center exposes children in grades K-6 to the fields of science, technol- ogy, engineering and math — commonly referred to as STEM. The young students spend about an hour each at several stations, as SWE members teach them about differentscientificprinciples. SWE public relations offi- cer Salam Ali, a senior me- chanical engineering major, said her organization hosts the annual event in hopes of increasing female repre- sentation in STEM subjects. "We want to get young girls interested in these subjects so they are more inclined toward them when they're older and enthusias- tic about pursuing careers in these fields," she said. To offset registration costs, members have raised about $3,000 through fun- draising efforts, including $1,000 in community do- nations, and are seeking a grant from the national or- ganization. The women also receive support from the Associated Students and the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Con- struction Management. The CSU, Chico stu- dents were recognized for their Imagineer Day efforts with outreach and section awards at the international conference in Nashville, Tennessee, in October. The rules are to construct a structure out of a deck of cards with the largest area. Students had a time limit of 30 minutes and a deck of cards. When the bell rang the teams stopped building and the SERRF liaison measured the height and length of each structure in inches. The structure with the largest area won.
