Ontheair ers for four years and $40 million, with $20 million guaranteed. "Some of the money that was thrown around at the beginning, you've got to be able to manage that," Kelly said of the opening days of free agency. "You're go- ing to pay some guy that's never made a Pro Bowl that's going to make more than anybody on your ros- ter, that's a little bit diffi- cult." • As trade talks with Co- lin Kaepernick continue to stall, Kelly said Thurs- day he would welcome hav- ing him on the team when offseason activities begin April 4. "I'd love to have him," Kelly said. "I'm a big Kap fan." The last time Kelly spoke publicly, at the NFL scout- ing combine in February, he said that Kaepernick wanted to stay with the team. Hours later, Kaepe- rnick's representatives re- quested a trade. Kelly said Thursday that those talks were be- tween Kaepernick's agent and 49ers general manager Trent Baalke, but that he has continued to have pos- itive interaction with Kae- pernick. "I talked to Kap two days ago, " Kelly said. "It was a good conversation. I told him, 'If you're here, we are going to coach you.'" • Kelly announced that he's hired Joe Bowden to be the team's inside lineback- ers coach, replacing Hardy Nickerson who left to be Illinois' defensive coordi- nator. Bowden, who had a nine-year NFL career as a linebacker, spent the past four seasons as an assistant linebackers coach with the then-St. Louis Rams. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 that you played with be- fore," Lowrie said. If all that wasn't enough, the shortstop position he anchored for much of his last A's season in 2014 not only was filled, it was filled by a guy from Cal, Marcus Semien. For a Stanford guy, he could only chuckle at that. Now, he's being asked to play second base, a po- sition where he has logged a mere 58 games in eight major-league seasons, none over the last two. But here's the kicker. Lowrie is sincere when he says he's good with it all now, albeit a bit mystified about the path he's wearing between Houston and Oak- land. He originally came to the A's in a trade following the 2012 season from the Astros. He didn't think it could happen again. "It caught me by sur- prise because there wasn't much dialogue (from Oak- land) during free agency," he said. "Plus, when you sign a free agent deal, you don't expect to be traded before the first calendar year. I don't know how of- ten that happens, but I can't imagine it happens very frequently." A's manager Bob Melvin anticipated that Lowrie might be struggling to em- brace a return and called him almost immediately after the swap went down. "Anytime you're traded, you kind of look at the end that traded you and not the team that traded for you," Melvin said. "Once it settled in a little bit for him, if he was going to be traded anywhere, he real- ized this was a place he could be comfortable in. I just wanted to make sure he knew how much we wanted him and why this trade was made." Notes • Kendall Graveman, pitching his third game and second start, had a far more consistent effort than the last time out. He opened with three score- less innings against Seattle with just two walks, gave up a long two-run homer to Robinson Cano in the fourth and a solo shot to Rob Brantly in the fifth. Nonetheless, Graveman was happy with the im- provement in a game that ultimately wound up an 11- 11 tie. "Making the jump from last start to this start, I was just mentally more pre- pared," he said. • During the A's off-day Wednesday, Chris Bassitt pitched three-plus innings in a minor-league game and according to Melvin, gave up six walks and a grand slam. "It's surpris- ing to see he had an out- ing like that because what we've been seeing is any- thing but," the manager said. "We'll just move on." • Danny Valencia had Oakland's best highlight of the day, a long, two-run homer to center off Mari- ners starter James Paxton, his third of the spring.
