8A Daily News – Saturday, May 12, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith God has so much power — should I be scared? McClatchy Newspapers LOVE CHRIST IS EVIDENCE OF HIS POWER AND The Rev. Justin Hoye, pastor of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Kansas City: It is easy to become intimidated when we reflect on God as all- powerful, all-knowing and a just judge who demands an accounting of our lives. Still, these truths need not paralyze us, especially as we reflect on how God manifests himself in human history. As God reveals himself in the person of Jesus Christ, he is still understood as all-powerful, all- knowing and a just judge. Additionally we see evi- dence of God's will: to gather the lost, heal the sick, reconcile the sinner and care for the poor. Many Christians celebrate the Easter season by reflecting on the New Testament accounts of this powerful will. Jesus Christ demonstrates God's will to transform us into people who live lives moved by love and not by fear. "There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment, and so one who fears is not yet perfect in love." (1 John 4:18) Fear is replaced with love, and we are able to love because God first loves us. Rather than be scared by the power of God, one should rejoice in how God has demonstrated that power in our world. His power _ shown in Jesus Christ — is not only evidence of God's love, but also the action that enables us to move from fear to perfect love. YOUR LIFE The Rev. Duke Tufty, pastor of Unity Temple on the Plaza: Who do you think God is? An old man with long, white hair and beard, sitting on a golden throne in the far reaches of the sky with a handful of lightning bolts? move so he can punish you if you do wrong, possi- bly even send you to hell at the end of your exis- tence? Do you feel you fail to measure up to this God's expectations because you were born sinful and unworthy by nature? If the answer to some or all of the above is yes, then you should most defi- nitely be scared. As a matter of fact, you should be horrified. If so, do you think God is watching your every There is a different way to think about God, one that I feel is much more realistic. God is spirit, an everywhere-present energy that is in you and all around you. it serves you without question or pause. God has nothing but your highest good in mind and provides you with life, love, peace, harmony, compassion and many other wonderful things. That indeed is a lot of power, but it will never be used to harm or punish you in any way. God is good, so don't worry; be happy! This spirit is the very essence of your being, and Visit The Kansas City Star (Kansas City, Mo.) at www.kansascity.com. GOD WANTS ONLY POSITIVE THINGS FOR What does my life show? These thoughts are addressed to those who are members of the body of Christ – those who are born again Christians and who have made a per- sonal decision to follow Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord. "Nor is there salvation in any other for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). The Bible speaks clearly about what kind of life we live. It says a good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart. But it speaks more specifically. what God's Word says regarding the fruits of the Holy Spirit. "But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kind- ness, goodness, faithfulness, gentle- ness, and self-control. There is no law against these things" (Galatians 5:22 NLT). Recall There is a "slippery slope" at times attacking our desire to live out the fruits of the Spirit. Some things get in the way and dull our understanding of Spirit led behavior. Even dedicated Christians can fall into the trap of being busy about many things that rob them of intimate fellowship with Jesus. When we begin making deci- sions on our own, with our natural mind, and neglect to take it to the Lord in prayer, we can end up moving in a mine-field of mistakes. We can begin wheeling and dealing instead of sub- mitting. We often map out our own plans, feeling good about our ability to per- form tasks so professionally. This state of mind is empty and does not produce the righteous fruits of the Holy Spirit. God's direction has always been for His children to seek His face, especial- ly when making decisions. When we simply follow God's Word we don't need to worry about becom- ing unbalanced in the area of following Him. "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths" (Proverbs 3:6). When we earnestly practice walking close to Jesus, and when we sincerely desire His direction (over ours), we can be assured that the peace of God will be present in our mind, and that the fruits of the Spir- it will be evident in our life style. 1 Corinthians chapter 13 is often called the Love Chap- ter. The summation of this chapter is that we can do all kinds of wonderful works and have enough faith to move moun- tains, but if we have not love, we are nothing. Wow. That really sums it up, doesn't it? While we cannot "whip up" the fruits of the Spirit within our life, we can know (for sure) that the fruits of the Spirit will grow in our life, when we put God first. How do we measure our growth and success in this? We look into the Word of God and take our example from His history. One such example is the defeat of Israel, clearly described in 1 Samuel and chapter 4. They did not seek God about going into battle and they were slaughtered. On the opposite end of things, when they did seek God's direction and walked in obedience to God, they won every bat- tle. (MCT) — The day after her mother died, with the house surreally silent, Mary Lou Quinlan reached to the highest shelf of her mom's Fort Myers, Fla., bedroom closet and discovered the "God boxes." There were seven junky boxes stuffed to the brim with scraps of paper, each holding requests in Mary Fin- layson's loopy shorthand for celestial help in matters great and small: that an insurance claim be decided in her favor, that her daughter's business meetings go well, that "the Pergo floor be the right choice." Many — scrawled on store receipts or business cards or coasters — asked to heal ailing family members, friends, strangers she had never met. "She inhaled a worry. She exhaled a prayer," is how Quinlan puts it in her book "The God Box: Sharing My Mother's Gift of Faith, Love and Letting Go" (Greenleaf Book Group), a loving tribute to her mother, who died May 29, 2006. Quinlan, who had always known her deeply Catholic Patricia Martin GodTalk What do we battle against the most? Some would say it is the enemy, or Satan. Actually, while there is a war going on between Christians and Satan, we have a battle with ourselves too. If we want the fruits of the Holy Spirit to continue growing within our life, we must drink from the water of life. God's Word pro- vides the water of life, and His fountain never runs dry. "but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life" (John 4:14). God, and to take time in prayer and fel- lowship with Him. The Holy Spirit will lead and guide us into fresh and fruitful green pastures. The fruits of the Spirit will grow and be manifested in our life. Jesus gave us a wonderful promise: "I am the vine; you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing" (John 15:5). Our heart needs to be tender in our walk with Jesus. We need to daily remind ourselves to drink and feed upon the Word of Patricia Martin leads the ministry God's Precious Jewels, a Tehama County based ministry that cares for the physical and educational needs of Native American children nationwide. She has recently founded the local Jehovah Rapha ministry of meeting for those healed long term of catastrophic illness.
