Not meeting this goal is linked to high school dropout rates and an increased likelihood of future incarceration. In Tehama County, 41% of third graders tested proficient in 2011. We'd like to see that number increase. Schools have the tools and the expertise, but the community needs to join as a partner that pro- motes reading and writing as criti- cal life skills we all value. On May 24, we invite you to join us for a special morning summit, A Monster of an Event, as Expect More Tehama launches Tehama Reads, a county-wide reading and writing campaign and promotion of school readiness. involvement. She works with edu- cators and communities across the country in an effort to support success for all students and fam- ilies. Expect to be part of an amazing session on parent and community involvement featuring Fran Hjal- marson of No Excuses University. Hjalmarson is a school counselor at Los Penasquitos Elementary School in San Diego, California. Utilizing innovative and effective strategies, she has been able to positively impact parent and community Expect to hear how our three libraries have partnered with local schools to bring Accelerated Read- er to kids this summer! Expect to know how you and your service club, business or Howard, Director of Sacramento Reads, a program launched in 2011by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson. According to the CST assessment, in Sacra- mento only 37% of 3rd graders read on grade level. There are 19 zip codes in the city, and there is not a single zip code that has at least 70% of 3rd graders reading on grade level. Sacramento Reads is out to change that. Hear Nikolaus share their vision. Expect to hear from Nikolaus school can join the effort as we take our talents to the classrooms and neighborhoods this summer and back to school in August.
