Welcome to the San Francisco 49ers. and they'll give you fun for a lifetime. If you have ever thought about playing golf, then "Get Golf Ready" is for you. Whether you are a over the field during his first 49ers rookie minicamp Friday, and that the work- out actually took place — something that never hap- pened last year during the NFL lockout — might've been the most positive result. Several players appeared tired and timid, notably first-round pick A.J. Jenkins of Illinois, and some even had to be spelled at times to a 48- year-old coach with bad knees. BASEBALL Red Bluff Shasta 4 2 Shasta wasted little time, knocking around Red Bluff starter Taylor Figgs for three runs in the first inning on their way to a 4-2 win. Following a Robby Lasby RBI sin- gle that drove home Figgs in the bot- tom half of the sixth to make it 4-2 the Spartans loaded the bases with one out. Shasta brought in Andrew Lau- ritzen to relieve and with one pitch he got Evan Sinclair to ground into a rally ending double play. Figgs finished the game with a sin- gle, double and a triple. He tripled in the first inning and scored on a Chuy Ramirez RBI single Francisco coach clearly wanted to make a statement to his newest players — and perhaps nobody more than Jenkins — that such subpar performances will not be tolerated, going as far as to call the 49ers a ''meritocracy,'' a system where everything is earned. The speedy wide receiv- er drafted 30th overall left a lasting memory on his first day in a 49ers uniform for the wrong reason. About halfway through the morning's 90-minute practice, the receivers broke into a balance and speed race, otherwise known as the figure-eight drill. Jenkins lost at least two races — the first by just a nose — to undrafted rookie Chris Owusu of Stanford and never recov- ered, dropping two passes and looking lethargic the rest of the way. beginner at golf or returning to the game, the "Get Golf Ready" program is designed to teach you in five short lessons, everything you'll need to know to step onto the golf course and play. You could tell that right away. But the bad news is we've got to get them in shape. I don't know exactly what all these guys have been doing in the last six months.'' Oak Creek Golf Course James wins 3rd forward LeBron James is the NBA's MVP for a third time, putting him alongside some of the game's all-time greats. A person familiar with the decision told The Asso- ciated Press that James will be announced Saturday as this year's winner of the league's top individual honor, and that he'll be for- mally presented with the tro- phy by Commissioner David Stern on Sunday afternoon before Miami hosts Indiana in Game 1 of an Eastern Conference semi- final series. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the league has not announced the results. James is winning the award for the third time in four seasons. Only seven other players — Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jor- dan, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Moses Malone — have at least three MVP trophies. NBA MVP award MIAMI (AP) — Heat James said last week that while another MVP award ''would be amazing and would be humbling,'' it's not what drives him. In his ninth season, James still has not won an NBA title and it's clear that, although he want- ed to reclaim the MVP tro- phy, winning a champi- onship is far and away his top basketball priority. ''What I'm all about is team and ever since I was a kid, I was always taught it's team first,'' James told the AP on Friday. ''My first time playing basketball, we went undefeated and won a cham- pionship and Frank Walker Sr. gave everyone on the team a MVP trophy. Right then and there, I knew that this is what I wanted to do. I wanted to see my teammates reap the benefits as well.'' Abdul-Jabbar won the MVP six times, Jordan and Russell five times each, Chamberlain four times. • 9:15 a.m., ESPN2 — MLS, New York at Philadelphia • 11:30 a.m., FOX SOCCER—Serie A, Inter Milan at Lazio •4 p.m., CSNC—MLS, Chivas USA at San Jose Monday CYCLING •2 p.m., NBCSN — Tour of California, stage 2, San Francisco to Santa Cruz MLB •4 p.m., ESPN — Chicago Cubs at St. Louis •7 p.m., CSNB—Colorado at San Fran- cisco •7 p.m., CSNC — Oakland at L.A.
