My Mother was a gem. She made my growing up time comfort- able even though as a teen-ager, I claimed to know more than my mother. A few years into my grow- ing time, that is becoming an adult and a mother too, I realized that I did not know more than my mother. I have since learned that hundreds of children have claimed knowing more that their mothers only to have to eat their words later. red clothes, I am sorry I didn't wear more red for her. Each child Each year I pull out a statement that I wrote for my mother. I have published motherly tributes before but feel that I need to do it again as a reminder to me how carefully Mother nurtured and loved us. My Mother I loved my Mother's chocolate fudge and the crispy way she cooked pork chops, I loved the way she read special words from the Parent's Magazine, She asked me to answer the questions And she said she was so proud when I knew the answers. I have not been able to identify a specific author but was able to secure the copy of the song from the Library in Burns, Oregon one year when I was visiting family there. Folk songs have made a great impression on people over the years. Songs that make you happy, songs that make you sad and those ditties that are just plain fun and can lift you out of doldrums of life. My Mother's Mother had a favorite song for each child to hear each evening before bed. Unfortunately Grandma Elsie had to leave her pump organ in Nebraska during the "The Little Birds' Ball" was a Henry van Dyke composed a prayer, titled "A Prayer for Mother" Following are excerpts that are true for many mothers. In 1903, by educator bath prayer. …Protect her life…I cannot pay my debt for all the love that she has given; but thou, Love's Lord, wilt not forget her reward, Bless her in earth and heaven." This tribute to Henry's mother is a fair reminder that each of us should treasure our mothers. Henry van Dyke's prayer was popular and by World War I it was included in prayer books printed by the U.S. government for use by troops in the field. She moved in with her parents, filed for divorce and said she is going to find hap- piness. She had an affair, and we tried to work through it, but she wanted me to heal according to her timetable, not mine. of our children, and she rarely sees them. When she does, it is all fun and games and no responsi- bility. We both work pro- fessional jobs. I have been through all the hurts and emotions and every- thing that goes with a divorce. I keep hoping she will come to her sens- es and return home. Since she doesn't pay I have custody any bills or child support, she left us in a difficult financial bind. I recently met someone who is a sweetheart. But I still have a few feelings for my soon-to-be ex. They will need to see her, and you are entitled to the financial assis- tance. And while it's possible that your wife's desire to be irresponsi- ble and immature will diminish in time, we see no reason for you to wait around unless she is willing to get into coun- seling and work on her marriage. It is natural for you to still have some feelings for her, but you should not be stuck pin- ing away. Rest assured she won't be doing the same. Dear Annie: I am the step-grandmother of a 7- year-old whom I consider my granddaughter. ''Missy'' does not have a relationship with her father (my husband's son), although we have been actively involved with her since she was an infant. Missy's mother subsequently had another child, now 3, with some- one else. We recently were informed that Missy can- not visit us on weekends without her little brother. According to their moth- er, he ''cries all weekend when his big sister is gone.'' this woman is simply seeking a babysitter for the weekends. We have resorted to elaborate rea- sons why we cannot have both kids, but I'm afraid we're running out of excuses. We have not seen Missy for weeks now, but my husband refuses to take the 3-year- old. What should we do? — Perplexed Dear Perplexed: You may be right that Missy's mother is looking for free babysitting, but the price of saying no is rather steep. She seems perfectly willing to keep her away until you acqui- esce, so you might recon- sider and ''adopt'' the 3- year-old, as well. Missy might appreciate it. You also could try working out an arrangement that doesn't involve week- ends, perhaps taking Missy out for ice cream on Wednesdays or pick- ing her up from school. It My husband and I feel wouldn't be the same, but at least you would remain in regular con- tact. If there is any way to encourage your stepson to be more involved in his child's life, that would be a positive move. And also look into grandparents' rights in your state. Dear Annie: I can relate to ''There's a Lady in the House.'' I've been married for four months. I, too, found out after the wedding that my husband cursed. I tried everything from kisses for good words to lovingly point- ing out that I did not appreciate his bad lan- guage. One day I lost it. After hearing the umpteenth curse word come out of his mouth, I simply responded in kind. The look on my husband's face was incredulous. I said I was tired of butting heads over his language and if I can't beat him I might as well join him and speak on a level he can understand. Was it drastic enough? You betcha! It actually worked. band's language not only changed, but he now also appreciates me so much more. — Still a Lady in Texas That day, my hus-
