ByJimSalter and Jill Colvin The Associated Press ST.LOUIS Republicanpres- idential candidate Donald Trump canceled one of his signature rallies on Friday, calling off the event in Chi- cago due to safety concerns after protesters packed into the arena where it was to take place. The announcement that the billionaire business- man would postpone the rally until another day led a large portion of the crowd inside the University of Il- linois at Chicago Pavilion to break out into raucous cheers. Meanwhile, sup- porters of the candidate started chanting "We want Trump! We want Trump!" There were isolated phys- ical confrontations between some members of the crowd after the event was can- celed. There was no sign of Trump inside the arena on the college campus, where dozens of UIC faculty and staff had petitioned uni- versity administrators to cancel the rally. They cited concerns it would create a "hostile and physically dan- gerous environment" for students. Before the announce- ment the event wouldn't take place, a handful of in- tense verbal clashes took place between Trump sup- porters and protesters as the crowd waited for his ar- rival. For the first time dur- ing his White House bid, the crowd appeared to be an equal mix of those eager to cheer on the real estate mogul and those overtly op- posed to his candidacy. When one African-Amer- ican protester was es- corted out before the event started, the crowd erupted into chants of "Let them stay!" Veronica Kowalkowsky, an 18-year-old Trump sup- porter, said before the event started that she had no ill will toward the protesters — but didn't think they felt the same way. "I feel a lot of hate," she said. "I haven't said any- thing bad to anyone." Hours before the event was scheduled to start, hundreds of people lined up outside the arena at the University of Illinois at Chi- cago — a civil and immi- grant rights organizing hub with large minority student populations. Trump back- ers were separated from an equally large crowd of anti-Trump protesters by a heavy police presence and barricades. Some Trump support- ers walking into the area chanted, "USA! USA!" and "Illegal is illegal." One dem- onstrator shouted back, "Racist!" One protester, 64-year- old Dede Rottman of Chi- cago, carried a placard that read: "Build a Wall Around Trump. I'll Pay for it." However, 19-year-old Rusty Shackleford of Lom- bard, in line to attend the Trump rally, said he was there to "support the man who wants to make Amer- ica great again." Chicago community ac- tivist Quo Vadis said hun- dredsofprotestershadposi- tioned themselves in groups around the arena, and that they intend to demonstrate right after Trump takes the stage. Their goal, he said, is "for Donald to take the stage and to completely in- terrupt him. The plan is to shut Donald Trump all the way down." By Steve Peoples and Julie Pace The Associated Press MIAMI Candidates shut- tled out of Florida and abandoned their vicious rhetoric — at least with each other — as the tone and central front in the increasingly desper- ate push to stop Donald Trump shifted on Friday. No longer was Marco Rubio insulting Trump's hair or hand size. And there was no sign of Trump's references to "Little Marco" or "Lying Ted." A confident Trump in- stead adopted a mag- nanimous tone, calling for party unity, while Rubio focused on policy differences and turned to Republican competi- tor John Kasich for help, as the Republican front- runner's rivals — and the party's establishment — grasped for any way to slow Trump's march to- ward the nomination. "Clearly John Kasich has a better chance of stopping Donald Trump in Ohio than I do," Rubio told reporters on Friday, encouraging his support- ers in Ohio to vote for Ka- sich next week. The extraordinary tac- tic reflects the increasing sense of urgency looming over the 2016 contest as Trump eyes what would be a devastating sweep in next week's winner-take- all elections in Ohio and Florida. In all, 367 Republican delegates are at stake Tuesday in Florida, Illi- nois, Missouri, North Car- olina, Ohio and the North- ern Mariana Islands. A win in either Florida or Ohio, some fear, could give Trump an insur- mountable delegate lead. Polls, and the candi- dates' travel schedules, suggested that Kasich's chances in Ohio may be better than Rubio's in Florida. Rubio claimed fresh momentum in the state as he campaigned there Fri- day, but his rivals left him alone in Florida as the day progressed, preferring to campaign in more com- petitive territory across the Midwest as the Flor- ida senator's grasp on his home state appeared to be slipping. Before heading to Missouri, Trump intro- duced a significant new ally at a news confer- ence at his Palm Beach resort: retired neurosur- geon Ben Carson, who endorsed his former GOP rival and warned that a failure to rally behind him would "frac- ture the party in an ir- reparable way." Carson said that he and Trump had "buried the hatchet" after months of political wrangling, de- scribing the front-runner as a "very cerebral" per- son. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, the other candidate in the four-man Republican race, embraced the shift toward civility during his lone Florida appear- ance before heading to Illinois. The fiery conser- vative's team desperately wants Rubio and Kasich to lose their home state contests next week, which would likely force both to leave the race and allow Cruz to go after Trump one-on-one. Even under that sce- nario, the delegate math would make it difficult for Cruz to overtake Trump before the party's July convention. Meanwhile, Trump re- peated his calls for party unity on Friday.
