Ontheair aboutRodneyChilders."It would be pretty tough to turn around and walk out on everybody who's been a part of building everything that we've built." Harvick came to the des- ert as a favorite to win the fourth Sprint Cup race of the 2016 season. He won four consecutive races on the asphalt mile tri-oval and five of six until Dale Earnhardt Jr. took last fall's rain-shortened race. All Harvick did was lead 143 of 219 laps and finish second. "I feel like we've had some good showings here, but coming to this track, I'd definitely put that 4 car as my No. 1 pick," driver Jimmie Johnson said of Sunday's 312-mile race. Harvick brought the same car that he won here with in last spring's race. He's also healthy again, af- ter fighting an illness last week while finishing sev- enth at Las Vegas for this third top-10 in as many races. "I started racing here in the mid-'90s," Har- vick said about running lower-series races at Phoe- nix. "You still see a lot of the same fans and people that followed your career up the ranks. I love com- ing out here." Harvick FROM PAGE 1 "He brings veteran lead- ership & will compete," El- way tweeted. "This is the 1st step in our process." Sanchez, 29, is due $4.5 million next season in the final year of his contract. He spent his first five NFL seasons with the Jets, helping them to the AFC championship game in his first two years by winning four road playoff games. But the fifth overall pick in the 2009 draft lost his job in New York and spent the last two seasons with the Eagles, starting 10 games and going 4-6 filling in for Nick Foles and later Sam Bradford. The former star at Southern California has a 37-35 record as a starter in his seven NFL seasons. He joins Trevor Siemian, who took one snap last year as a rookie, as the only quarter- backs on Denver's roster. The Broncos had hoped to hand things over to Os- weiler, Manning's longtime apprentice. But they were outbid by the Texans, who signed Osweiler to a four- year, $72 million contract Thursday. That deal in- cludes $37 million in guar- antees for a quarterback who suffered four injuries in seven career starts, all in 2015. Sanchez became ex- pendable in Philadelphia when new coach Doug Pederson lured longtime Chiefs backup Chase Dan- iel with him to the Eagles from Kansas City for $21 million over three years. Pederson said Sam Brad- ford, who signed a two- year, $36 million deal this month, would remain his starter. Of course, Sanchez will have to win the starting job in Denver and Elway isn't done addressing his QB needs. He'll likely obtain another experienced passer and almost certainly will grab a QB in next month's draft. The Broncos won it all despite having the league's second-lowest cumulative passer rating behind only the Rams. In Danny Trevathan and Malik Jackson, they've lost two starters to free agency from their dazzling defense that led the way to a 24-10 win over Carolina in Super Bowl 50. But behind game MVP Von Miller, who re- ceived the Broncos' fran- chise tag, Denver should be in position to remain among the league's elite defenses in 2016. Sanchez FROM PAGE 1 Notes • Sam Fuld is in a famil- iar spot — fighting for a job on the roster. He's got four outfielders in front of him — starters Jarrod Parker, Billy Burns and Khris Da- vis and backup Coco Crisp, and Chris Coghlan and Mark Canha also have out- field time on their resumes. That doesn't seem to have thrown him off his game any. He went 2-for-2 with a walk, a triple and a three-run homer Friday, driving in four runs while scoring a pair. "He's been here before, fighting for a position," Melvin said. "It's nothing new to him. He's a fighter, going out there and try- ing to win a position. He played good defense. He had a good day at the plate. He's a pro." Melvin described Fuld's outfield path as "clogged and cloudy" but he says he knows Fuld will "go out there and do the best he can. And like I say, he's been in this position before." • Canha got his first spring game in, batting fourth and getting a dou- ble in three at-bats. His back problems apparently over, Canha is expected to compete for playing time at first base, left field and DH. • Stephen Vogt is con- tinuing to throw to bases as he rehabs his right el- bow from surgery six weeks ago. There is still no date for him to get a start defensively, although he will DH Saturday against the Rangers. • Reliever Fernando Ro- driguez continues to pound out strikeouts coming out of the bullpen. Three of his five outs Friday were strikeouts and in three spring games he has yet to allow a run in 3 2/3 innings while strikeout out seven. • The good news the A's had been hoping for con- cerning Jarrod Parker van- ished in a particularly jar- ring and cruel way Friday. Instead of some kind of muscular impingement that would mean the vet- eran might not miss too much time, an MRI showed the right-handed starter had refractured the medial epicondyle in his right el- bow while releasing a pitch in a bullpen session Thurs- day. A's FROM PAGE 1 He just has to be smart at times, but it's hard to be careful in this game." Bochy admitted he was a bit concerned Pence had to do so much running around in his first game in the outfield. "He got tested," the man- ager said. "I didn't want him to get tested that much, to be honest. It's al- ways different when you go game speed. So he's go- ing to have to learn to pace himself a little bit, and it's going to be up to us that we take care of him." Notes • Samardzija gave up six hits and three runs over four innings in the Giants' eventual 5-4 loss to the Mariners, but he wasn't concerned about the re- sults. He did finish strong with a 1-2-3 fourth. "I always like the sec- ond half of the game more than the first half," he said. "As long as I can get pre- pared and get through that lineup one time, I usually settle in and feel better as the game goes on. That's pretty standard for me." • Matt Cain will throw a second bullpen Saturday, and if that goes well, the next step will be facing live hitters. And after that? "If he's ready to go, he'll be in a game. Closer Santiago Casilla will make his first spring appearance in one of the club's split-squad games. Meanwhile, Sergio Romo will face live hitters for the first time with the next step being pitching in his first game." • Bochy was very im- pressed with the work of Clayton Blackburn fol- lowing up Samardzija, likening him to the de- parted Yusmeiro Petit. The 23-year-old right-handed prospect threw three per- fect innings before run- ning into some trouble in a fourth. Blackburn is probably destined for Triple-A, but could be putting himself at the front of the line for an eventual 2016 call-up if needed. "It's good to have these guys knocking on the door," Bochy said. "Knock on wood nothing happens, but we feel like we have some depth now, more so than we had last year." • The Giants received a briefing from the Ma- jor League Players' Asso- ciation Friday, including executive director Tony Clark and noteworthy lieu- tenants Dave Winfield and Bobby Bonilla.
