Zamorano '73 *Lifetime member I f you ask Greg Barra '03, he double majored during his four years at the University of Texas. "I like to say that I got a degree in history from UT and a degree in people from SigEp." The day-in and day-out of living in the fraternity house, coupled with positions as vice president and president of the chapter, served to prepare Greg for life outside of college. "On top of the great personal relationships, social events, and intramurals, I had the opportunity to be a part of leadership. Personally and professionally, I have benefitted more from SigEp than anything else I've ever done." Just out of college, Greg was recruited to work on the headquarters staff for Sigma Phi Epsilon. He lived in Richmond and was a regional director for one year and the director of recruitment and new chapter development for three years. In 2007, he moved back to Houston and started a career in commercial real estate at Boyd Commercial, LLC, where he was a top producer last year. "I think that in any sales or production-oriented business built on relationships, you have to become relevant quickly, build relationships, and maintain them. Effectively, that's what the best of SigEp is about— whether you're in recruitment learning to share the SigEp experience with a potential new member; as an officer trying to manage a group; or as an alumnus maintaining relationships with your brothers." Reflecting on his time as a part of the brotherhood, Greg has chosen to give back to SigEp as a volunteer on the Texas Alpha Foundation board, as a recruitment instructor at the Carlson Leadership Academy, and as a member of the Skull & Crossbones Society. "Sustaining gifts are what allow our organization to do what it does best. Our history is one of individuals having an outsized role in giving. We rightfully celebrate those people and their contributions, but none of it works unless the majority of people are involved on a sustained, year- in-year-out basis. People have done it before us, and now it's our turn." Greg makes his home in Houston with his wife, Wimberly, and their son, David. He keeps in touch with a number of his SigEp brothers, watching the transition from late nights out to weddings, to first birthday parties. Greg and Wimberly are members at Second Baptist Church and Greg spends his free time playing golf and taking in music off all kinds. He can be reached at gbarra@boydcommercial.net.
