Justthisweek,Ire- ceived a letter with very helpful infor- mation and a suggestion for how all of you, my dear readers, can partici- pate in a fun project. Are you curious? Read on. DEAR MARY: I sug- gest asking your readers to submit a list of the spe- cific tools and/or prod- ucts they find most useful around their homes — in- side and out. I think many of your Everyday Cheap- skate readers, like myself, are do-it-yourselfers for many things around their homes. I'm sure there are lots of tools that others find as useful as you find your Shark Navigator vac- uum, Sonic Duo Floor and Carpet Scrubber and Nok- Out Odor Eliminator. I'll go first: Miller Stain Wood Scratch Fix Pen is a great product that hides scratches on furniture, even antiques. Follow the directions exactly. I use a tissue to apply for the best result. This scratch-fixing pen, which comes in a va- riety of colors, saved the veneer on my 25-year-old dining room table. Weldbond Universal Ad- hesive: This adhesive can be cleaned with water and is non-toxic, nearly odor- less and dries clear. I've discovered that it works best if you rub the prob- lem area with something first, such as a nail file. This stuff works well on most plastics, wood, metal, tile, porcelain and fabric — the surfaces we all have around our homes that need to be re- paired from time to time. Weldbond cures in just 24 hours. I have used this adhe- sive to make my grand- son's toy trucks last lon- ger. I apply the glue to the seams between parts of his new toys to rein- force the stress points and make the toys sturdier. I've also used Weldbond to glue trophies, statu- ettes, small car parts, knobs and wood frames. It is an excellent glue product. Use small clamps to hold parts together while the glue dries. A 14.2-ounce bottle is only about $9. Stanley Six-Piece Jewel- ers Precision Screwdriver Set: I wouldn't want to be without this handy set of small screwdrivers. It's useful for so many things. The set sells for about $6. If you find this to be an interesting topic, I look forward to learning what other readers have to add. — Ken DEAR KEN: I think this is a fabulous idea! I invite all of my readers to participate. So that I don't get buried in an av- alanche of random mes- sages, please follow these steps to submit your con- tribution: —Go to Everyday- Cheapskate.com. —Click on "Ask Mary a Question." —Fill out the simple form and send me your contribution just like Ken sent his. I'll sift through your re- sponses, assess, eliminate duplicates and compile the responses for all of us to enjoy. This is going to be great fun. For links and more in- formation on the products mentioned above please visit the "DIY Tools" page on the Everyday Cheap- skate website. Wouldyouliketosend a tip to Mary? The cat was scared and had been crying for at least two days, according to a neighbor. The cat couldn't find a way down due to the dangerously sharp palm fronds. Equipped with a lad- der, heavy protective gear and leather gloves, Sho- bash saved the day for the tabby cat. Neighbors and employ- ees were grateful for the positive outcome and a safe new home was found. RED BLUFF FIRE Passages Health Insur- ance Counseling & Advo- cacy Program is present- ing Welcome to Medicare workshops for those turn- ing 65 this year or younger adults who will be entitled to Medicare due to a dis- ability. As people get closer to Medicare eligibility, there are several things to con- sider. In light of the fact that Medicare's coverage is much like employer group coverage it's important to know what questions to ask, including how will my retiree plan work with my Medicare, can I delay enrolling into Medicare and not be penalized, do I need a drug plan and are there programs avail- able to lower my Medi- care health and prescrip- tion costs? Workshops are sched- uled 10 a.m. to noon Thurs- day at Lakeside Pavilion, 2565 Lakeside Village in Chico and 1-3 p.m. Tues- day, March 15 at Red Bluff Community Center, 1500 S. Jackson St. Registration is required by calling 898-6716. This free workshop is designed for baby boomers and oth- ers who will be new to Medicare this year want to understand how their Medicare benefits work. Family members and care- givers are welcome to at- tend. People who are new to Medicare will be del- uged with information from different insurance companies marketing their products. Ronda Kramer, program manager, warns signing up with the wrong plan, or not doing anything may cost new Medicare recip- ients thousands of dol- lars, and they may not be able to make changes if enrollment deadlines are missed. For more informa- tion, call 1-800-434-0222. If your group or agency would like a workshop, call Katherine Tilman at 898-5927. HICAP does not sell or endorse any insurance products. Passages helps older adults and family care- givers with important ser- vices to empower them to remain confident in their ability to sustain and en- joy independent lives.
