Numerology is the theory, there is a mystical relationship between numbers and physical objects or living things. Our old buddy and math whiz Pythagoras believed in Numerology. The ancient and some not so ancient Hebrews put faith in the Kabbalah which is loaded up with magic numbers. The Chinese have long believed in lucky numbers as being auspicious for starting new projects or betting on black in the casino. Players of the North Carolina Educational Lottery believe in lucky numbers despite mathematical odds which say otherwise. Lots of folks have put great faith in the esoteric power of magic numbers beyond just counting beans. Being a certifi ed bonehead of the fi rst order, I used to scoff at Numerology thinking it was some sort of goofy pseudo science like Astrology, Scientology or long term Economic projections. Like Saul on the road to Damascus, the scales have now fallen from my eyes and I now realize that Numerology is what's happening. Finally I understand that Numerology does in fact control the future and fate of everyone. The Beatles on the White Album sang about "Revolution Number 9;" but they were off by four and picked the wrong number. They should have sung about Revolution Number 5. Let us ponder how Number 5 currently controls America's fate. The Count from Sesame Street is very proud of numbers. The Count is particularly proud of the Supreme Court for its numerical abilities. The political system of America is now brought to you by the number 5. Our Supreme Court knows how to count to fi ve. They counted to fi ve and appointed George W. Bush as President back in 2000 by stopping the counting of votes. That counting to fi ve worked out pretty well for everybody. Things were swell under Bush. Last week the Supreme Court counted to fi ve again and reversed 100 years of prohibiting corporations from directly funding political ads. They have unfettered the benevolent voices of our long silenced Mega Corporations so that corporations can now whisper in the ear of the great unwashed electorate about why their corporate candidate is wonderful and why the candidate they oppose is pond scum. Poor AIG, Big Pharmacy and General Motors never had any political infl uence before because their free speech had been silenced for more than 100 years. Now the corporation tongues are free at last, free at last, free at last. Oh for a thousand corporate tongues to sing. Chief Supreme Court Justice John Roberts was just kidding during his confi rmation hearing when he said he viewed the role of the Supreme Court as that of an umpire calling balls and strikes. He and four of his buddies in black robes tore up the rule book for elections in their Citizens United vs. the Federal Elections Commission decision. The Fabulous Five removed the crushing weight of precedent from Wall Street fi rms, big banks and mega corporations which have thus far been unable to get out their opinions about what the government should do. The U.S. Supreme Court in its curious Dred Scott decision announced that black people were property and had no right to sue for freedom because they weren't citizens. Justice Roberts and his four dudes have simply lifted poor mega corporations from their prior status as the Dred Scotts of the political system. Giant corporations now have the same legal rights to political free speech as stupid old ordinary human being citizens. Some soreheads have complained that the mega corps will use their fi nancial clout to buy up TV air time to clobber opponents of corporate goals. Nothing could be further from the truth. Corporations will only advertise for candidates who they sincerely believe will insure domestic tranquility and promote the general welfare. They would never run ads which would benefi t themselves fi nancially by either electing Corporate Toads or defeating a misguided Congressman who opposed their right to use the power of eminent domain to take your house to build another set of Del Boca Vista condos where you used to live. You, as an individual, have every right to spend $20 million to buy up TV ad time to support your candidate just like Goldman Sachs now has the right to do it. If you don't have $20 million lying around to compete with the mega corps, then that is just your Karma resulting from a bad draw in the Numerology game. PITT DICKEY, Contributing Writer.
