Bill@upandcomingweekly.com. PUBLISHER'S PEN Finally, the Prince Charles Hotel's vinyl windows have been offi cially ruled a "pane'. Now what? Will owner John Chen comply with the courts ruling and replace the historically incorrect windows? Or will he pay the fi nes and become a good corporate neighbor to help downtown Fayetteville move forward in the 21st century? Only time will tell. But, at least for now, it's over. After months of legal vollying and maneuvering Superior Court Judge Knox Jenkins rendered his decision last week, and Prince Charles Hotel owner John Chen's assault on the Fayetteville Historic Resources Commission and the city is fi nally over. In addition, Chen must pay more than $3,000 in fi nes for prematurely installing a two pane vinyl window instead of the wood frame replacement that would uphold the historic integrity and ascetic beauty of this grand old building. This ruling is a victory not only for the city, the historic commission and the board of adjustments that upheld the original ruling, but also for the legitimate business owners who have invested thousands of dollars in the historic redevelopment of downtown Fayetteville. Personally, I don't think this is the last we'll hear from John Chen. After all, you still have those ugly window air conditions looming over the city sidewalks. They have to violate some city ordinance. It's more obvious to me that Chen seems to be extremely hostile and vindictive toward the city and his downtown neighbors. So what happens now? Will he comply, be a good citizen and contribute to making our city a Southern showcase. Or will he continue his belligerent and defi ant stance toward city hall and fellow downtown residents? Only time will tell. After all, his hotel is sitting on a really prime piece of property. Matter of fact, it would make a great location for a parking deck.
