Don't Be a Pain in the Drain! Dispose of Grease Properly Smart food disposal can help protect our environment and source drinking water as well as your own prop- erty. Pouring fat, grease and oil down the drain is not only illegal, but also can cause grease blockages. These blockages are the number one cause of untreated water spills. Do your part to prevent such accidents by following these guidelines for proper good disposal: • Dispose of fats, grease, and oils properly. Pour cooled fat, grease, and used cooking oil into a disposable container (empty plastic food containers work well) and put it in the garbage. You can also pick up a free "Fat Trapper" – a reusable plastic container with foil bags to collect grease – at the PWC Booth at the Carolina Home Show, Feb. 26-28 or at the PWC Customer Service Center, 955 Old Wilmington Road. • Wipe grease from pots and pans with a paper towel before you wash them. • Compost vegetable scraps or put them in the trash. • Never put meat scraps down the drain. • Don't depend on heavy-duty drain cleaners to fix a grease clog. These cleaners do not melt the grease. Grease re-solidifies inside sewer lines and causes blockages. • Own a business? Check out special disposal information for commercial customers at our website, www.faypwc.com. Click Environmental, then click Cease the Grease. Smart Ways to Use Kitchen Appliances Because your refrigerator can make up about 15% of your total energy use, it's important to make it as energy-efficient as possible. • Set the temperature 36-39ºF. • Keep the door closed as much as you can by taking out as much as possible at once and deciding what you want before opening the door. • Keep the refrigerator well-stocked to reduce the loss of energy and maintain the temperature. • Make sure seals are airtight. Test seals by closing half of a piece of paper in the refrigerator. If it pulls out easily, the seal may need replaced or the latch may need adjusted. Surprise! Dishwashers are more water-efficient than hand washing. Hand washing uses 37% more water than a dishwasher; dishwashers can save a house- hold nearly 5,000 gallons of water a year. Although dishwashers consume electricity as well as water, low- ering the temperature of your hot water tank reduces the electricity usage. The US Department of Energy recommends a hot water tank setting of 120ºF. Here are more ways to save: • Save 20 gallons of water by scraping dishes free of food instead of rinsing. • Wash a full load and try using the pre-rinse feature, which uses less water. • Skip the heat dry cycle and use a rinse agent and air- drying to save energy. Visit the PWC exhibit at the 2010 Carolina Home and Garden Show at the Crown Expo Center Feb. 26, 27, 28.
