ByPatriciaMartin Providingwearelisten- ing to the voice of the Holy Spirit, we know that it is Heart Preparation Time. World conditions are out of control, and many are still leaning on their own carnal wisdom, rather than seeking the face of Almighty God. Fellow believers — we must not allow the atroc- ities occurring today to dim our view of the power of God — the love of God — and the faithfulness of God towards nations, but especially for the body of Christ. While we are to pray and seek God for Amer- ica and the world, it is vi- tal we remember that God looks at our individual lives as well. This is en- couraging, yet extremely important, for we must not forget that God sees every sparrow that falls to the ground, and the very hairs on our heads are numbered. "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care" (Mat- thew 10:28). "But even the very hairs of your head are numbered. Fear not there- fore: ye are of more value than many sparrows" (Luke 12:7). What love — what wonderful love does our Heavenly Father be- stow upon us! God has always dealt in the lives of His indi- vidualized creation as well as in the lives of na- tions. He puts nations up and pulls nations down. "But God is the judge: He putteth down one, and setteth up another" (Psalm 75:7). He has never neglected or ceased loving His individual masterpieces — human beings. "For we are God's masterpiece…" (Ephe- sians 2:10). How can we do any less than seek to follow His ways? The Bible gives us the following Scriptures: "Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and dark- ness, instead expose them" (Ephesians 5:10- 11). "Don't act thought- lessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do" (Ephesians 5:1). "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths" (Proverbs 3:6). All of us desire our per- sonal safety. God has an- swers for us that will anoint our heart and life with the peace of God dur- ing troublesome and dan- gerous times. "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty," says God Himself in Psalm 91:1. This beautiful Psalm is known as the Psalm of protection. Verse 14 gives us the answer for such covering and protection. "Because he hath set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him. I will set him on high because he has known my name." Do we know His name so well that we call upon the Lord for all our needs? He is ever present. God's Word exposes and clearly defines His will for our life. When we are washed in the blood of Je- sus and saved, we become spiritual giants of the Lord! The Holy Spirit lives within our spirit, and so we are not defeated. Do not swallow the lie of Satan that we cannot live according to God's Word, for once we study, trust the Word of God, meditate upon the Word, and obey that Word, we can begin to have a daily walk of victory! "Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godli- ness, through the knowl- edge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which has been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine na- ture, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust," is how He puts it through His apostle in 2 Peter 1:2-4. Yes, it is Heart Prepa- ration time for the body of Christ! The good news is that the blessed Holy Spirit is with us to guide, and direct. The blood of Jesus cleanses us when we come for forgiveness and when we sincerely repent, turning away from any known sin. In His faithful- ness God gives us forgive- ness and victory. He prom- ises us, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all un- righteousness," in 1 John 1:9. When we put God first we can powerfully pray for America, the world, and for each other. Lord, we come to You without excuses. We come with thirsty hearts, for we want to please You. We come in childlike faith, asking for and re- ceiving Your forgiveness. May our lives be in agreement with Your Word. We gladly come to You, knowing it is heart prepa- ration time. Amen. GOD TALK Heart preparation time for the Body of Christ By Rachel Zoll and Josef Federman The Associated Press NEWYORK As Bernie Sand- ers headed toward victory in New Hampshire, pun- dits noted the barrier he was about to break: Sanders would become the first Jew- ish candidate to win a major party presidential primary. But since that Feb. 9 win, instead of the burst of com- munal pride that often ac- companies such milestones, the response from American Jews has been muted. One reason: The Vermont sena- tor, the candidate who has come closer than any other Jew to being a Democratic or Republican presidential nominee, hasmostlyavoided discussing his Judaism. Sanders has baffled Jews by refusing to name the Is- raelikibbutzwherehebriefly volunteered in the 1960s, sending reporters scram- bling to solve the mystery. When they found the kib- butz, he wouldn't comment. In New Hampshire after his breakout win, he de- scribed himself as "the son of a Polish immigrant," not a Jewish one. At a Demo- cratic debate, he spoke of the historic nature of "somebody with my back- ground" seeking the pres- idency, but didn't use the word "Jewish." A recent headline in the liberal Jew- ish Daily Forward newspa- per read, "We Need To Out Bernie Sanders as a Jew — For His Own Good." Rabbi James Glazier of Temple Sinai n South Burl- ington, Vermont, said Sand- ers' comments were being discussed by rabbis in the liberal Reform movement. "What did he leave out there? He didn't say 'Jew- ish Polish' immigrant. Re- form rabbis have picked up on this big time." Sanders' lack of religious observance is not what ran- kles. It has become so com- mon for Jews to identify "culturally" instead of re- ligiously with the faith that the Pew Research Center, in its most recent study of the American Jewish pop- ulation, used a category called "Jews of no religion." Michael Bloomberg, the former New York mayor, also is not religious, but he was embraced for his unwavering support of Is- rael and his generous do- nations to Jewish causes. Louis Brandeis, who in 1916 became the first Jewish jus- tice on the U.S. Supreme Court, did not practice his faith, yet he was the pride of American Jews. Brandeis went on to become a lead- ing U.S. advocate for Zion- ism. But Sanders, during more than three decades in pub- lic life as a mayor, congress- man and U.S. senator, has developed few relationships with Jewish groups or lead- ers — on religious issues or on Israel. He has supported a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but has not made Israel in any way a priority. "I would say that he has never been one of those in Congress who was active in a Jewish caucus, who turned out for Israel, who was involved in those issues — and he still isn't," said Jonathan Sarna, an expert in American Jewish history at Brandeis University. Ironically, when Sanders gave his most religiously focused campaign speech, he only seemed to under- score his distance from Ju- daism. It was last fall at Lib- erty University, the evangel- ical school founded by the Rev. Jerry Falwell in Lynch- burg, Virginia, and he ad- dressed the school on Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, one of the most im- portant holidays of the year. Discussing his beliefs in the speech, he said he was "motivated by a vision" for social justice "which exists in all of the great religions." But Sanders didn't say he was Jewish. Later, he did stop in at a Rosh Hashana gathering at the home of the Lynchburg mayor. The Sanders campaign did not respond to repeated requests for comment for this article. Stanley "Huck" Gut- man, former chief of staff in Sanders' Senate office, wrote in an email, "He is an old friend, a close friend — but we have very seldom, if ever, discussed religion." Sanders' life follows a fa- miliar arc in 20th century American Jewish experi- ence: The son of an immi- grant, he grew up in the shadow of the Holocaust, which Sanders has said wiped out much of his fa- ther's family.
