Ontheair Giants' exhibition against the Cincinnati Reds in Goodyear. Bumgarner's biggest adjustment Friday was throwing to catcher Trevor Brown for the first time. Last season, Posey was be- hind the plate for every single one of Bumgarner's 3,312 pitches. "Yeah, it's been a while," said Bumgarner, whose beard is beginning to grow back after he shaved it off for photo day last week. "Brown looked good back there. I was pretty happy. He's got a good idea of what I'm trying to do." Bumgarner allowed a home run to Eugenio Su- arez in the first inning. He struck out the side in the second inning. Notes • Hunter Pence (sore right Achilles tendon) con- tinues to make progress and could appear in an ex- hibition by the middle of next week, Bochy said. • Conor Gillaspie dou- bled and Ehire Adrianza, who entered as a first base- man, knocked in two runs as the Giants won 4-3. Right-hander Ian Gar- deck, who was impressive in relief for Single-A San Jose last season, struck out two in a scoreless inning. Chris Heston also had a solid spring debut with two scoreless innings. Giants FROM PAGE 1 He's right — with rela- tively gentle breezes, the Blue Monster wasn't ex- actly defenseless but scores were there to be had Friday, as in the open- ing round. There were 25 rounds where a player went under 70 at Doral last year; so far this year, the count is already at 21 with the weekend left to go. Johnson shot a flaw- less 64, eight birdies and no dropped shots on the way to the best round of the day. McIlroy shot a 65 for his share of second place after two rounds, and Danny Willett (66) was alone in fourth at 7 under. JANG, LEE SHARE HALFWAY POINTLEAD South Korea's Ha Na Jang has developed a habit of making the ex- traordinary seem normal. In January, she made a hole-in-one on a par-4 and last month she won her first LPGA title, at the Coates Golf Championship in Florida. The 23-year-old was at it again, holing a monster ea- gle putt from off the green on her way to a 6-under 66 to grab a share of the half- way lead with her compa- triot Mirim Lee at the LP- GA's Women's Champions tournament. Lee got up and down from a greenside bunker to birdie the last and shoot a 67 to join Jang in a two- way tie at the top of a con- gested leaderboard after a wet and windy second round at Sentosa Golf Club. Thailand's Pornaning Phatlum carded a 67 and Norway's Suzann Petterson signed for a 69 to be equal third, a stroke behind the leading pair, with a group of four players lurking just one shot further behind and 34 players under par. Golf FROM PAGE 1 "That was kind of em- barrassing," he said. "I'm happy though. The fastball was there; the slider was a little iffy. And I was pretty nervous. I got to the mound to start, I looked at the rub- ber, I looked up and said 'it's pretty real now.' With all the Oakland fans here, I felt like I was there even though I'm here in spring training." The A's like Manaea enough that they privately say he could make the ros- ter out of spring training if they need to fill out the rotation. Not bad for a guy with just nine games at Double- A, where he was 6-1, 2.36 last season. In addition to his 97 mph heater, he mixes in a nice slider and a splitter that he uses as a changeup. Scouts say those pitches have room to improve, but he showed decent control last season with all three pitches. He walked 26 in 741⁄3 innings while pitch- ing for four different teams in 2015. Manaea was a sandwich pick after the first round in the 2013 draft, and might have gone higher were it not for a hip injury. Last year he missed time with groin and abdominal inju- ries. Once coming to the A's, he was both healthy and ex- ceptional, particularly for a left-hander. He threw 42.2 innings in seven starts, go- ing 6-0 while walking 11 and striking out 51 to go with a 1.90 ERA. His WHIP of 1.148 in the hitter-heavy Texas League opened eyes around baseball. What stands out for scouts is Manaea's ability to keep his fastball testing its limits deep into games. It's the kind of thing that made Randy Johnson such a threat, and while Manaea will never throw with a Johnson-esque fastball dominance, the ability to light up radar guns at 96 or higher after 90 or 100 pitches is much coveted. It is problematic that Manaea will get a chance to start and throw deep into games this spring, but he's clearly on the fast track to be pitching in the Coliseum sooner rather than later. Notes • Sonny Gray threw a 42-pitch session in a sim- ulated game Friday morn- ing, alternating time on the mound with reliever John Axford, anger which Gray pronounced himself ready for his first Cactus League start Wednesday against the White Sox in Glendale. He said he felt strong and "excited to get out there next week." • In his first at-bat of the Cactus League, highly touted shortstop Franklin Barreto homered. Barreto hit 13 homers while averag- ing .302 at Class-A Stock- ton last year and is listed by most scouting services as the A's No. 1 prospect. "If you watch his batting prac- tices, you know he can do that," Melvin said. "When you homer in your first at- bat, it's not luck." • In the A's other game, they came up short 6-3 against the Diamond- backs when Arizona broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run third inning against losing pitcher Chris Smith. The A's didn't score in two in- nings against D-Backs ace Zach Greinke, but scored twice in the third against reliever Tyler Wagner on hit from Eric Sogard and Billy Burns. Third base- man Matt Chapman had the only other offense for either team from that point on when he pulled a homer out to left field in the sev- enth. • Khris Davis provided the centerpiece for a six- run second inning for the A's againstthe Rockies with a bases-clearing three-run double. The inning also included an RBI double by Carson Blair, a run-scoring Tyler Ladendorf grounder and a Coco Crisp sacrifice fly. The game's first run came an inning earlier on a Josh Reddick double and a Danny Valencia double. • Back troubles con- tinue to slow Mark Canha. There's progress, but no timetable to see when the A's might get the first base- man/outfielder in his first spring game. • Throwing out the first pitch before the A's Cactus League home opener were Bert Campaneris and Rol- lie Fingers. • Jesse Hahn and Ken- dall Graveman, both on their way back from inju- ries, made it through their most recent bullpen ses- sions and are down to re- turn to the pen again on Monday. • After coming off the bench to DH Friday in Mesa, Stephen Vogt is due to get a start as the DH Sat- urday against Kansas City as he progresses from el- bow surgery. He singled as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning, and once again cries of "I believe in Stephen Vogt" were heard. • Melvin said he knows lefty Felix Doubront, who gave up the first two runs to Arizona in Friday's road game, would prefer to start rather than relieve. On Corning's final posses- sion, Haydon heaved a 3, but Gridley's Samuel Cota hauled in the rebound as time expired to seal the win for the Bulldogs. "I was just thinking one more stop. All through- out the year our mentality was one more stop," Spring said. "Sam and I had to tell everyone else to get an- other stop. Sam was such a great leader. I feel like he should be MVP." Corning, which has won 15 of their last 17 games, has also played in nine match- ups that have reached over- time or have been decided by five points or less. Fri- day night's game was un- folded into another close contest. "We've been playing games like this all season," Wilkins said. "We had a couple of possessions where we didn't attack that way we normally do, coughed the ball up and didn't fin- ish. We pounded the ball inside like we wanted. Just needed to make a couple more shots and do a better job on Spring." In the D-IV section fi- nal two years ago, Corning came away with the victory using an arsenal equipped with seniors. This time around, the Cardinals were led by a strong group of sophomores mixed in with some senior leadership. "All four of our seniors were valuable members of this team," Wilkins said. "There's definitely some young talent that we'll have for a couple more years. They just should have got- ten their first title tonight."
