TheAssociatedPress DORAL,FLA. Arareinstanceof Adam Scott seeming less than pleased Friday came after his first putt on the par-4 16th, when he miscalculated the speed and left the 30-footer well short. Of course, that was after he drove the green on the 315-yard hole and had to merely settle for a two-putt birdie. Otherwise, there wasn't much for Scott to dislike dur- ing the second round of the Ca- dillac Championship. His 6-un- der round of 66 got him to 10 under for the tournament and put last week's winner of The Honda Classic two shots clear of Rory McIlroy and defending champion Dustin Johnson at the midway point of the first World Golf Championships event of the season. "Overall, it was a lot of good stuff," Scott said. "Enough qual- ity shots and enough quality putts to negate a couple of mis- takes out there, but they can eas- ily happen on this golf course. So I'm glad there was enough of the good stuff to keep me up on top and kind of setting the pace af- ter halfway." Scott made eight birdies, in- cluding three straight on holes 15, 16 and 17 to strengthen his grip on the lead. "I'm probably a little more relaxed this week leading going into the weekend than if I hadn't won last week," Scott said. "A 36-hole lead doesn't mean that much, unless it's by about 10. I could tee off tomorrow and not be leading. I'm going to have to play a good couple of days and try to keep moving in the right direction while the conditions are allowing us to." GOLF ROUNDUP Scott leads McIlroy, Johnson at WGC Cadillac By Sharon Martin smartin@chicoer.com @SharonBMartin on Twitter BUTTE VALLEY Two years ago, a crop of sophomores on the Grid- ley High boys basketball team suf- fered their first Northern Section Division IV loss to Corning High. That group of sophomores — now seniors, have flipped the script as the No. 1 seeded Bull- dogs topped the No. 3 seed Corn- ing Cardinals 52-49 for the Divi- sion IV title Friday night at Butte College. Senior Quinn Spring scored a game-high 24 points, 19 in the second half, for the Bulldogs (24- 5). "The difference was that spurt that Quinn Spring went on that we had no answer for, for about three minutes," said Corning head coach Kurt Wilkins. The Cardinals (22-7) were down 13 points in the fourth quarter un- til Corning's Wyatt Haydon hit a 3-pointer to jumpstart an 11-0 run on offense. Haydon, who led Corn- ing with 18 points, stole the ball and dished it to Brendan Hoag for a layup. Then Hoag followed with an offensive board and a put-back to get back within 51-45. Haydon found a lane in the paint to drain a bucket then Calvin Ware exe- cuted a put-back to make it a four- point game. JOSIE LEPE — BAY AREA NEWS GROUP The Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Sean Manaea struck out four in two innings against the Colorado Rockies at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz., on Friday. By John Hickey Bay Area News Group MESA,ARIZ. There's not much about Sean Manaea that is run-of-the-mill. He carries his Samoan ances- try on a 6-foot-5, 235-pound body, but instead of playing football he's all about baseball. He's capable of throwing 97 mph with his left arm, but he was such an unknown quan- tity coming out of high school in In- diana, no big-time college team took a gamble on him. Instead, he went to Indiana State, the same school that produced for- mer NBA great Larry Bird. There's no one close to comparable from base- ball. That might be about to change. Manaea wasn't a hot recruit when he arrived at Indiana State, but he zoomed to the top of the scouting charts during the 2012 Cape Cod Summer League, where he went 5-1 with a 1.22 ERA, and struck out 85 batters in 57 1⁄3 innings. He was named the league's top pitcher and outstanding pro prospect. The Oakland A's got Manaea in the Ben Zobrist deal with Kansas City at the trade deadline in July, and he im- mediately became the best pitcher in the Oakland farm system. Manaea, 24, is expected to start this season at Triple-A Nashville, but he might not be there long. In his first Cactus League start Friday, he gave up a walk and a single in two innings, and struck out four during a 9-4 win over the Colorado Rockies. "He hit 97, he threw some change- ups, some two- and four-seam fast- balls, too," manager Bob Melvin said. "That was impressive." Said right fielder Josh Reddick, "As a left-handed hitter, I think he would not be a very comfortable at- bat. I was talking with Coco (Crisp) to find what kind of movement on the pitches he was seeing from center field. Those pitches look real good." Manaea made a bad throw on a pickoff attempt at first base in the second inning, but that was his only mistake. A'S SPRING TRAINING Manaeanotrun-of-the-mill Big guy out of Indiana State best pitcher in Oakland farm system By Andrew Baggarly Bay Area News Group SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. Johnny Cue- to's exhibition debut with the San Francisco Giants is being pushed back. Cueto will not start the home game in Saturday's split-squad against the Texas Rangers. In- stead, he was told he would make his first start of the spring Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies. "There is nothing wrong with me physically," Cueto said through translator Erwin Higue- ros. "The manager made the de- cision. ... It is well known that I had a long last year. I pitched a lot. The team is just holding me back to be cautious with me, and I appreciate what they are doing for me." Giants manager Bruce Bochy acknowledged that Cueto was behind other pitchers during his throwing sessions and live bat- ting practice, mostly because he did very little throwing after help- ing to pitch the Kansas City Roy- als to a World Series title last Oc- tober. "That's why we're doing this," Bochy said. "Obviously, we think he's behind." Cueto pitched 212 innings dur- ing the season and 25 more in the playoffs; a year earlier, his 2432/3 innings pitched for the Cincinnati Reds in the regular season were the most in the National League. So Cueto, who signed a six-year, $130 million contract with the Gi- ants in December, will have one fewer exhibition start — five in- stead of six — to build a rapport with catcher Buster Posey. "It's an old school thought, but going on what I've seen from vet- eran pitchers, they find a way to get ready," Bochy said. Bochy is taking it extra slow with several of his players this spring. Outfielder Denard Span (hip surgery last September) and shortstop Brandon Crawford (typ- ical spring shoulder soreness) are getting at-bats only as the desig- nated hitter in these early games. Left fielder Angel Pagan (offsea- son knee surgery) won't appear in a game until Tuesday. Former Blue Jays All-Star left- hander Ricky Romero, who is in camp with the Giants on a mi- nor league contract, will take the ball for the home split squad Sat- urday. Minor leaguer Chris Strat- ton will start for the road squad against the Cleveland Indians in Goodyear. One year ago, Madison Bumgarner was in Cueto's posi- tion after setting a record for in- nings pitched in a postseason. Bumgarner kept insisting that the workload wouldn't have a carryover effect. Then he proved it by having a near identical sea- son (18-9, 2.93 ERA, a career-high 218 1/3 innings). How does Bumgarner feel now after a fuller offseason of rest? "Man, I can't tell the difference whether we do or don't (play in October), really," said Bumgarner, after tossing two innings in the SPRING TRAINING Cueto's debut for Giants held up GIANTS PAGE 2 GOLF PAGE 2 A'S PAGE 2 CORNING PAGE 2 SPORTS » redbluffdailynews.com Saturday, March 5, 2016 MORE AT FACEBOOK.COM/RBDAILYNEWS AND TWITTER.COM/REDBLUFFNEWS B1
