In the Spring, I look for daffodils. In the Fall, I look for the changing color of trees. The winter brings that fi rst crisp morning, that takes your breath away, and summer brings humidity so thick you feel like you could melt. For many, the advent of election season can be found in the signs that quickly line our streets and roads. At a newspaper, election season isn't fully in swing until one of our writers writes something that makes one of our readers mad. And in case you are wondering, welcome to election season! This past week we received a letter from a very angry reader, in response to the column titled "An Open Letter to Ann Romney" penned by Margaret Dickson. In her article, Dickson defended Mrs. Romney's choice to be a stay-at-home mom, but noted that Romney's wealth insulated her from the real worries and problems of the majority of American mothers, and prevented her from being able to advise her husband on real-world economic problems of everyday Americans. Our reader, who chose not to identify himself, took this to be an attack based on class warfare and the worse kind of partisan politics. This is not the fi rst, nor will it be the last time, one of our readers has railed against the perceived liberal leanings of our newspaper. I cannot begin to count the number of people who have written me very passionate letters about my liberal leanings, based on what others have written in the paper. For the record, I take it as a compliment. The letters really don't bother me, in fact, I celebrate them because that means that we are doing our job as guardians of free speech. I say this not to discount what our reader thought, but because qualifi cations, or rather in Dickson's opinion, lack of qualifi cations to advise her husband on the economy. The article Dickson wrote was written in response to comments by Democratic adviser Hilary Rosen, who said Mrs. Romney had never worked a day in her life because she chose to stay at home and raise her fi ve sons. The article had to do with Romney's Ann Romney won't be the head of the Federal Reserve if her husband is elected President, but she will give him advice as all First Ladies have in the past. Fayetteville's Weather Forecast Thursday May 10 Friday May 11 Saturday May 12 Fayetteville's Weather Forecast there is not one liberal bone in my body. What I do have is enough love for our Constitution and the fundamental rights of every person to express their views that I can run articles that I wholeheartedly disagree with. I count it as an exercise in freedom and I revel in that particular freedom that is held so dear in America. It would probably surprise the reader who wrote to us to know that as soon as I read Dickson's article, I began typing her an email. The email started with the lines, "Margaret, I have never disagreed more with you." worry about their future." Mothers, regardless of their economic station are going to worry about feeding their kids, how they do in school and worry about their future. Wealth does not take away those worries, it simply changes the kind of worry. Further, wives of U.S. Presidents have given counsel to their husbands on a whole host of issues from national defense to international relations, that they have had no personal experience or expertise with. It's part of being a wife. I don't think Romney ever intended to put his wife in charge of the Federal Reserve. Having said that, I ask dear reader, that you not throw out our papers, but rather you join me in celebrating the rights of others to express their view, and in our unalienable right to disagree. Mrs. Romney — now — is married to a very wealthy man. But the Mrs. Romney who made the decision to stay at home and take care of her children, was a college student, whose husband worked as a night watchman while they both went to school, and started their family. Mrs. Romney — now — climbed the ladder with her husband. So while she may not be clipping coupons now, she probably once did. In the early years as a student mother, I'm sure she learned to budget and stretch a penny. I think the line that struck an angry chord with me was this quote from Rosen: "She's (Ann Romney) never really dealt with the kinds of economic issues that a majority of women in this country are facing, in terms of 'How do we feed our kids? How do we send them to school? And why we JANICE BURTON, Associate Publisher. COMMENTS? Editor@ upandcomingweekly.com.
